Book Description

3 April 2012 0749465174 978-0749465179
In the aftermath of the financial crisis, the spotlight is even more on the role and activities of the CFO. Specifically, CFOs need to accelerate three aspects of their role: develop dynamic and distinctive risk management capabilities, motivate and align increasingly diverse work providers, and design and operate effective financial processes for internal and external customers. The winning CFOs in the next decade will be the ones who get the basics right, who prioritise their efforts, and who invest in the leadership development that creates the institutional capacity to achieve and sustain leading industry performance. CFOs need to embrace the new challenges and opportunities created by the financial crisis. The New CFOs provides the fundamental road map to success in this new environment for finance officers, their teams, and the organizations who employ them.

Product Description

Review

"The New CFOs a wonderfully clear, engaging, insightful exposition of what it takes to build a great CFO, and filled with practical advice to help CFOs survive and thrive" (Zarin Patel, CFO, BBC )

"These are difficult times for leaders who are faced with the task of managing an organization's finances and its risks in the face of uncertainties created by the financial crisis and the ongoing economic recession. This book, based on extensive research, interviews and experience, provides valuable practical advice. As a former CEO, financial regulator, and current board member, I would want my senior management team - and especially my CFO - to embrace the ideas and mindsets presented in this book" (Ernst Csiszar, MasTec Corporation )

"Companies now need to restore the CFO's rightful position of understanding the drivers of value and risk management, so that they are able to provide independent challenge. This book shows you how" (Allister Wilson, Partner, Ernst & Young )

Book Description

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo! 18 July 2012
Format:Paperback
For over 30 years I've heard the same complaints of the Finance function in the executive classroom: "They don't understand our business"; "We never see them"; "They're the ones who say No"; "Anytime we want help they're always closing - do none of them ever open?"

Here is a book that should be required reading for all Finance types, not just CFOs, for whom the above criticisms hit a nerve. Too often Finance concentrates on the pedantry of numbers rather than expanding the role to get involved with the guts of the business. In a delightfully informal, chatty style these authors, each with a pedigree that commands respect, set about describing the agenda of the CFO in these turbulent, grab-what-you-can days in which too many senior executives cock a snook at so-called governance. THE CFO should be, in the authors' words, the custodian of value; he/she should not only be the supreme master of the numbers - that's the bare, but essential, minimum requirement of the job - but should, inter alia, communicate these in a manner that presses home the message, be the tent pole on which all aspects of risk are erected, and keep the CEO on a tight choke-chain when it comes to M&A.

The messages contained in this book could prove to be a bitter pill for many numbers-obsessed CFOs and nascent CFOs but the mix of case studies, pithy soundbites from practitioners and down-to-earth advice drawn from the practical backgrounds of the authors will make it a pleasure to swallow!
