Heavy Devy 12 Sep 2006
By Jane Aland VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
The song `Far Beyond Metal' debuted way back on Strapping Young Lad's 1998 `Live in Australia' album, but it's taken till now for it to find it's way onto an appropriate studio album. As such the song is a fair representation of the mood of the album as a whole: very metal with a tongue-in-cheek knowingness about just how ridiculous the excesses of metal can be. There's still the odd moment of intensity and emotion (particularly on the albums closing trilogy of songs) but for the most part this is Strapping Young Lad kicking back and enjoying themselves, and as such while it may lack the intensity of the bands peak album `City' it's stuffed full with so many great riffs and songs you'll find it hard not to enjoy, and the band breaking out into an insane jazz-groove halfway through `Anti Product' is particular hilarious highlight. Maybe not the bands best album: but so damn enjoyable it's pretty essential anyway.

Strapping young lads fifth album, could well be their last if devin has his way,as he has become jaded and tired of the entire music industry, but as a final testament to the band this will serve its purpose.

This is an album that takes a little while to fully appreciate if im totally honest, the first thing that strikes you upon first listen is that some of the fury has gone, there is alot more melody than ever before,it still has its manic moments such as in the stunning you suck and first single wrong side but songs like monument and hope are more interested in capturing you than destroying you.

The inclusion of live favourite far beyond metal is more than welcome, and its great to know what the lyrics are, quite simply its one of the greatest metal anthems of all time.

Its an album that is capable of destroying you and devin is as unpredictable and kooky as ever but at times he throws more of his solo work into this i believe, but if this is the final syl album then its one that has potential to become a classic.

Album of the year? 18 July 2006
Format:Audio CD
The latest offering from SYL is in a word, amazing. Devin Townsend should surely get some praise from the music industry as this is the 3rd album he's penned in the space of a year (the other 2 being Alien and Synchestra) considering it takes bands roughly 2/3years to get out albums this is impressive to say the least, plus their tours with Arch Enemy,Ozzfest,Download he is by far one of the busiest musicians around. Anyway enough about that, this album is really well put together,as are the other SYL albums, each song compliments the other really well and in some respect feels like reading a story the album has a beginning a middle and an end, with no filler tracks which says alot about the effort that was put into this album. I personally felt that Alien had a few lulls,"Info Dump" being one of them. Another thing that stands out here is some of the tracks are lighter in terms of topic "you suck" is a perfect example of this or the more apt song "f*cker" which could be realeased as a single if im listening right? dont get me wrong the lyrics havent gone all comedy metal ala tenacious d but definatly a sunnier disposition in some places. The guys from Gwar fit in here perfectly and "Far Beyond Metal" is possibly one of the finest SYL songs to date, All in all this is a great metal album and like my title says, a definate contender for album of the year,so join the chants of "SLY SYL SYL" and embrace the future of metal.
