The Apex Learner Microscope appears to be a fairly robust product, designed with young learners in mind. The construction seems robust, although the eyepiece sleeve is plastic, not metal as implied in the "all metal construction" description. The carry case is an injection moulded affair that offers good protection for the contents, which is just as well because Amazon's packaging was oversized and poor. The instructions are very basic and don't cover all the contents. In particular, there is no reference at all to the shrimp farm that allegedly comes with the kit. There is a slot in the case for a scalpel, but that isn't supplied because of UK legislation regarding the supply of knives. There are five prepared slides, and there are cases containing fresh slides and cover slips to make your own.
Overall, this is a reasonable piece of kit for a youngster starting in microscopy at a very fair pricing point.
However, beware: - Amazon's service matched neither the product nor their own service description. The item was promised overnight, but took a week to arrive via City Link. Amazon refused to ship a replacement and failed to ring back after promising to do so. They even emailed a denial that the service was trackable, even though they also provided tracking details (which City Link failed to maintain). Amazon refunded the carriage charge, which was their sole remedy to an abject service failure that ruined a child's 13th birthday. Brunel Microscopes are kidding themselves if they believe Amazon's fulfilment service is a good match for their products.
I will never buy from Amazon again after the second similarly appalling experience in a row. You're free to choose - good luck!
