Review

A generous work, scholarly yet utterly accessible, a remarkable showcase of the detective's continuing allure. --David L. Ulin

Product Description

The publication in 2004 of Leslie S. Klinger's brilliant new annotations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's 56 short stories created a Holmes sensation. Here, in this eagerly awaited third volume, Klinger reassembles Doyle's four seminal novels in their original order, with over 1,000 new notes, 350 illustrations and period photographs, and tantalizing new Sherlockian theories. Inside, readers will find: A Study in Scarlet (1887) - a tale of murder and revenge that tells of Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting; The Sign of Four (1889) - a cinematic tale of lost treasure; the Hound of the Baskervilles (1901) - hailed as the greatest mystery novel of all time; and The Valley of Fear (1914) - a fresh murder scene that leads Holmes to solve a long-forgotten mystery. Whether as a stand-alone volume or as a companion to the boxed short stories, this classic work illuminates the timeless genius of Conan Doyle for an entirely new generation.

Format:Hardcover
You have to be really into the great Sherlock Holmes to get this book or you may find yourself with a very well put together door stop. For someone like myself who is a real fan of the stories then it's a lovely tome of information, minutae and Victorian background. It's not the kind of book you can easily carry round as a good read on a train or in bed. If you want to just read the stories you would be much better served with a cheap paperback and avoid serious back problems. However if you have digested all of the original works and need more, then this could be the book for you, along with of course the first double volume. You dip in, read the story and alongside pull in facts, annotations, and background which adds depth if not narrative. So, if you are new to the Great Detective, then dodge this and read the less unwieldy novel formats first. If you then become hooked, then buy this along with the first two which come as a box set and add to your knowledge of the character and time he lived in.

The games afoot. 19 Nov 2006

This is the final volume of what is possibly the most elegant printing of the canon. Even if you already own them all you will still need this, for the annotations and the presentation. Just to see it on your bookshelf will bring pleasure.

Everyone - that is Holmesian, Sherlockian and Fan - has their own way of enjoying SH. Whether it be on holiday, in the bath, on the tube/journey to work or just plain pleasure, the same sensation exists with every new 'inducted' volume; and that excitement exists here too.

I wondered whether the first two volumes would be equalled by its third. And shoot me down for doubting it! This third volume brings together the SH novels of SACD. It is filled to the brim with extra detail and commentary that will keep you thinking and rehinking and reposing the twists and turns of each. My personal favourite is "The Valley of Fear" - it has been assembled with a wealth that excites the eyes, tingles the senses with glee and a depth expected by the Talmud.....

Buy it if you're a Holmesian. Buy it if you're a Sherlockian. Buy it to know more, feel more and escape into the late 19th Century Victorian heaven of Sherlock Holmes.
