Product Description

Twenty years after his mother Karen left the small Irish island of Inis Dara, her son Chad (Hill Harper) returns bearing her ashes and looking for the key to her past. Karen's brother Tony (Donal McCann) has had no contact with her since she left, and is surprised to discover that his sister married a black man and managed a grocery in New York City. Meanwhile, Chad is attracted to islander Aislin (Aislin McGuckin), and she to him too, but the relationship meets resistance from Aislin's father Joe (Pierce Brosnan), as it stirs up the ghosts of his ill-fated affair with Karen.

From the Back Cover

It’s been twenty years since Tony Egan’s sister Karen left the quaint Irish island of Inis Dara for America. The news of her death is quickly followed by the appearance of her son Chad (Hill Harper- He Got Game) from New York with her ashes, looking for family and clues to his mother’s past.

The arrival of this stranger into the closed community arouses suspicion and curiosity. Old passions and conflicts are unearthed as Chad tries to piece together the story of his mother’s departure with the help of her old friend Brenda (Sinead Cusack- Stealing Beauty) and her ex-boyfriend, Joe Brady (Pierce Brosnan- The Thomas Crown Affair).

To be able to move forward, Chad must first unravel the secrets that bound his mother… but at what cost?

Maybe this caught me in the right mood or something, but I could not help but be charmed by this gentle Irish melodrama. The story is set in a tourist-board-pretty Irish cove. Into this small community a young coloured American boy comes `home'.. his mother left Ireland before he was born. Now she has passed away and he comes to stay with his uncle. All is not well however, as his return brings to the surface buried past stories and tensions mount, and his blossoming romance with Aislan, the young red-haired beauty of the island makes confrontation unavoidable.
It is fairly lightweight, but never frivolous in tone. Brosnan's role is not central - indeed it is Hill Harper as the young American who impresses, staying somehow remarkably gentle and neutral while never being a pushover, and Aislan McGuckin certainly makes his falling in love perfectly believable. It's this romance being as believable as it is, with such unforced chemistry, that helps the films succeed at its core, helping to offset the somewhat less credible backstory that unravels as the film progresses. On the fringes, what makes it more memorable are the throwaway moments we see in the background. Two nun's fly fishing, the postman cycling his rounds, the awkwardness of the attempts to bring some modern touch to the church service.. these all help give the character needed to avoid becoming a tourist fluff piece. And it succeeds for the most part.
Combine this gentle melodrama with the achingly beautiful Irish scenery, and an eclectic soundtrack with everything from Thin Lizzy to Elton John, via several beautiful Irish ballads, and this gets a thumbs up from me for a quiet night in.

My husband and I saw The Nephew by chance, and watched it several times after. It tells a story of true love and betrayal by the people you love. And it gave this young man an opportunity to learn more about his Mother and eventually her reasons for not returning home.It is a movie that crossed the racial lines and a lesson to be learned as history repeats itself. This movie can be seen by all ages.Wereally enjoyed the movie.

This film, featuring Pierce Brosnan, is an interesting mix-- racial, national, and sexual concerns all clash together in Ireland to make The Nephew definitely worth watching. There's tension everywhere you look. Hill Harper does a fantastic job with the title character, whose return to Ireland upon the death of his mother creates trouble on the little island of Inis Dara. It's all sorts of love story-- tragedy mixed with new chances-- and explores what it means to really *belong* to a community. I was fortunate enough to watch this on cable in the States shortly after its release, sometime in 1999... but it's impossible to find in stores. Take a chance on this great film-- you won't regret it!

This is a great cast coming together to really put forth a poignant message of family ties, lost love, renewed love, hard work, betrayal, grudges, sterotypes, racism - you name it.

I saw this once when I had a television. Got rid of the television (nothing ever good on) but wanted to see this again. I found it on Amazon.uk and ordered it. Fast delivery. Now it's just me and my dvd recorder - viewing the things only I wish to view and not the insipid, senseless muck stuffed down my throat masquerading as entertainment.

But I digress. Off my soapbox.

This is an entertaining movie to make you think. If that's not what you want to do - watch it anyway.
