Another excellent release of classic early `60's radio comedy from the BBC. This collection presents the eleven of the last twelve episodes (episode 18 is still missing and here as a script PDF) of series four of The Navy Lark, probably one of the most successful, long running and well loved radio series of all time. Telling the adventures of the crew of HMS Troutbridge, this is a wonderful comedy that has really stood the test of time. As it has very few topical references it is just as funny today as when first broadcast. These early series had a humour based on clever plots and characterisations, and are my favourites. The later series of Navy Lark relied a bit too much on silly voices and slapstick, I much prefer the clever writing on offer here.
Series four continues to follow the adventures of the crew of Troutbridge as they lurch from disaster to disaster, usually resulting from Mr Philips' dodgy navigation or CPO Pertwee's scheming. An effort is made in this series to introduce new characters, with the arrival of Vice-Admiral Ironbridge, Wren Cornwall and the Flatley family. The dreaded Mrs. Povey also starts to become more of a main character. These are, in the main, welcome additions, after four years the original stock of characters was starting to get a little stale, and harder to find new and amusing things for each to do. Bigger changes were to come in series 5!
As with the `Round The Horne' and ongoing `Goon Show' releases, these have been restored to their best possible quality (by, I am assuming, Ted Kendall, though there is no information to this effect). But please bear in mind the source of the material, some of it comes from off air recordings, so even with the best of restoration it occasionally sounds a bit rough. I must say that the quality of this release is head and shoulders above the rest, in comparison the quality is superb.
The eleven episodes are presented on six discs, each in a separate card slipcase. The six discs and informative booklet are collected into a handsome and quality feeling card box, about the size of a double jewel case. It not only sounds good, it looks good on the shelf!
The eleven episodes are:
Series 4 Episode 15 `Captain Povey's shop'
Series 4 Episode 16 `Leading Seaman Goldstein's party'
Series 4 Episode 17 `The invitation'
Series 4 Episode 19 `A strange hobby'
Series 4 Episode 20 `Mr Philips gets engaged'
Series 4 Episode 21 `The sinking of the bubble car'
Series 4 Episode 22 `Long Jonathan Pertwee'
Series 4 Episode 23 `The Admiral's accident report'
Series 4 Episode 24 `Over the sea to Rosyth'
Series 4 Episode 25 `The return of Sir Frederick Flately'
Series 4 Episode 26 `The ship's concert'
Disc 6 also contains a continuity announcement, and Christmas greetings to Antarctic survey teams from the crew of Troutbridge, and other popular radio shows of the day, including Round the Horne.
Well done BBC, keep them coming! (And any chance of a release of `Men from the Ministry'??)
