When the Navy Lark came back on the air in 1963, there was a radical change in format. Signs had started to creep in duing series 4 that the writer was keen to stir things up a bit with the established order, with the introduction of new characters. But now things went a whole step further, and the crew of Troutbridge, through a bizarre set circumstances, found themselves working for an independent television company in a series called `The TV Lark'. This ran for ten episodes before, through an equally bizarre set of circumstances, the crew were returned to Troutbridge, and normal service was resumed for the remaining 6 episodes of Series 5. This experiment would pave the way for writer Laurie Wyman's other ventures with the `Big Business Lark' and `Embassy Lark'.
Presented here are the nine extant episodes of the TV Lark, and all six episodes of Series 5 of the Navy Lark. All but one of the TV lark episodes are previously unreleased.
The TV Lark is interesting, and very funny. But it is clear that everyone is much more comfortable once the loveable nits get back on board ship. Given a longer run it might have settled a bit better, but sheer inertia is dragging the whole production back to the tried and tested format, characters and catchphrases of the Navy Lark. Once back causing chaos on the high seas, things get going full steam ahead, and the series really takes off.
One other change was that Ronnie Barker's character Lieutenant Commander Stanton is dropped, and my second favourite character from the show (after CPO Pertwee) is introduced - Commander Bell the new ship's captain, also played by Barker. I just love his monologues where he manages to drop every clanger possible. It's a pity that he would only last for a few seasons.

TV02 - The Prestige show
TV 03 - Z ambulances

There are 8 discs, presented in two double size jewel cases collected into a flimsy card case. This looks a little different to the previous series card box presentation, and is a little annoying as they do not now match up on the shelf. This is a minor niggle though. There is also an informative booklet with an essay about the TV lark/series 5, episode synopsis, Radio Times listings, photos and cast biographies. As with the `Round The Horne' and ongoing `Goon Show' releases, these have been restored to their best possible quality (by, I am assuming, Ted Kendall, though there is no information to this effect). But please bear in mind the source of the material, some of it comes from off air recordings, so even with the best of restoration it occasionally sounds a bit rough. I must say that the quality of this release is head and shoulders above the rest, in comparison the quality is superb.
