This album is fantastic. It's got fragile and relaxing vocals, a wonderful assortment of instrumentation including much-loved mellotrons and well constructed string scores creating a powerful wall of sound. There's a nice mixture of organic and synthesised instruments, demonstrating the band's ability to use a variety of noises to enhance the emotional content conveyed by singer Mårten Rydell.
Each song has plenty of room to breathe, each instrument remaining incredibly reserved throughout lending a saturnine feeling to the album.
It's strewn with metaphorical lyrics that need time to be dissected and understood which means time needs to be dedicated to this album, but it is well worth the wait.
They are an incredibly visual band, especially so with their live projections. A method also utilised by other epic sounding bands such as Mew and Hope Of The States. The band seemingly create visual soundscapes in the listeners' head and you can almost imagine flying over Canadian mountains and countryside. Very apt considering the album was created in the middle of nowhere, in a log cabin, in a forest in Sweden.
