Product Description

Product Description

Ásatrú (AH-sa-troo), also called Odinism, is the native religion of the Teutonic peoples as embodied in the fundamentals of their cultural expressions. Much more than just a belief system, it encompasses every aspect of ancient Northern European society. This book is an attempt to explain the basic philosophic and moral ideals of this ancient way of life, while seeking to eliminate many of the misconceptions surrounding it. Demonstrated here is the nature of a faith that has existed for centuries, in spite of numerous campaigns to suppress or destroy it by various powers. Once the reader learns the core values found within this creed, it is easy to recognize how it coincides with our notions of civilization and its evolution. It teaches inner strength and courage, as well as kindness and compassion. In introducing the positive, ethical standards Ásatrú has to offer, the aim here is to rekindle the primal spirit within us all. ¿The author provides an in-depth introduction for those new to the folkway, yet gives much food for thought to the experienced practitioner. Sure to inspire deeper investigation of the various aspects of Ásatrú. Highly recommended.¿

About the Author

Long overdue! 4 May 2006
By Osred - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I have no hesitation in recommending this overdue introduction to the Northern European indigenous religion of Asatru (otherwise known as Odinism). Anyone who has ever wondered why contemporary people of Nordic ancestry are attracted to the spiritual path of their forebears will find this book to be accessibly written but intellectually sound, honest but

compassionate, and folkish in the most morally-positive way. Unfortunately, most academic treatments of this topic tend to subject our ancestral spirituality to modes of enquiry that are unhelpful - such as Marxist, feminist and various post-modern approaches. Meanwhile, New Age books on the subject often tend to misrepresent it entirely. Mark Puryear explains the Nordic religious tradition with the patience of a true believer who wants only to explain his faith. My one hesitation in giving this book five stars is that there are a few word-processing errors. They are irritating but not important, and no doubt they will be corrected in future editions.

Absolutely fantastic book! Insightful and well written. 19 Nov 2009
By Brian W. Osborn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is an absolutely perfect book for those interested in in true Asatru and Odinism. It clearly explains the natural inner calling of the gods to their people. It calls on its folk to embrace their heritage without the need to place themselves above or below any other cultures heritage. It shows Asatru/Odinism in its true perspective in the same light as the Native Americans reviving their tribal religions and heritage. A lost soul going back to the rightful owners/creators of that soul can only be a good and beneficial thing. Doing what is natural for ones spirit through their own peoples traditions/beliefs adds a balance/harmony and peace for ones self that can only be experienced to be understood.

Great Book 1 July 2007
By D. von Milikowski - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Mark has written from someone who has transformed himself through Heathenry and studied deeper. Unlike most, he does not claim to be a be all end all. It is great for new people as well as old in the Heathen movement no matter which path you take (Asatru, Odinism or even the Theodish could glean a little off of Mark's work).

You can listen to the white wash of people who have not read it or are too busy playing up to organizations and skip it, which would be an error on your behalf.
