'Why we eat what we eat?' is a key question for the 1990s, posed again and again in government departments, in sectors of the food industry, by professionals in health, in education, and in catering, to name a few. It is the same question adopted as the springboard for the UK Economic and Social Research Council's (ESRC) Research Programme on 'The Nation's Diet' (1992-1998), a wide ranging, multi-disciplinary set of co-ordinated basic research projects across the social sciences, including economics, psychology, social anthropology and sociology, as well as education and media studies.

Lecturers comment;

'An excellent multidisciplinary text reporting the results of the ESRC programme on this topic.'

From the Back Cover

'Why we eat what we eat?' is a key question for the 1990s, posed again and again in government departments, in sectors of the food industry, by professionals in health, in education, and in catering, to name a few. It is the same question adopted as the springboard for the UK Economic and Research Council's (ESRC) Research Programme on 'The Nation's Diet' (1992-1998), a wide ranging, multi-disciplinary set of co-ordinated basic research projects across the social sciences, including economics, psychology, social anthropology and sociology, as well as education and media studies.
As the book of the Programme 'The Nation's Diet' has three main purposes;

sets out a selection of key research results, providing an overview in each chapter of projects in the Programme, including the research designs and methods that were adopted
serves as a preliminary introduction to the social sciences, for readers who have little previous acquaintance with them
examines the widely used expression 'food choice' and demonstrates that its meaning is contested across the social sciences
The text also;
provides a unique insight into the discontinuities and commonalities that characterise research in the social sciences - within this field
provides up-to-date evidence of the multiplicity of factors affecting food use
presents a unique portrait of 1990s Britain, providing a baseline for historical and international comparisons
serves as a point of reference for policy and practice
Anne Murcott is Director of the ESRC Research Programme on 'The Nation's Diet' and Research Professor of the Sociology of Health, South Bank University, London. She is the author of many articles in sociology on various aspects of health, and on diet and culture and has been actively engaged in the sociology of food and eating for twenty years.
Contributors include;

I saw this book in the uni library and thought it would be really useful for my course. So I ordered a copy and found it was excellent for writing my coursework and great to dip into. It is set out like a journal which actually makes it quite easy to read for research, but not a book you would just pick and read for fun!
