Product Description

Product Description

Since opening in 2006, the award-winning National Dining Rooms has established itself as a favourite with London's National Gallery visitors, offering a great British eating experience.

In the National Cookbook over 100 traditional dishes are given a modern twist by restaurateur and Great British Menu judge Oliver Peyton and his chefs. With the emphasis on sourcing the freshest and most flavoursome ingredients, this beautiful book celebrates British produce throughout the seasons, from young spring asparagus, to summer pudding, to Christmas roast goose. Familiar recipes get a new look - honey-glazed ham is cooked with cider and lavender - but old favourites are not forgotten: comforting, rich, fish pie, retro coronation chicken, sticky treacle tart.

The Gallery experience is celebrated by stunning details of masterpieces from one of the greatest collections of Western European paintings in the world.

Art of cookery. 29 Sep 2009
Format:Hardcover
On a recent visit to London my wife and I paid our usual visit to the National Gallery and decided to have lunch in the National Resturaunt. The food was superb; beautiful fresh ingredients simply cooked with sauces that were produced on the premises. When we got home my wife could not stop talking about the meal she had eaten so we decided to go on line and buy the National Cookbook.
It is literally a feast. Illustrated with details from paintings, with a food connection, from the National Gallery collection and lavish photographs of the dishes themselves.
This is not a book for foodies who like experimental, highly spiced, or exotic food. It is full of traditional meals cooked to perfection.
The book itself is nice enough to eat, and will certainly be a present at Christmas to some of my foodie friends.

It inspired my wife to actually pick my copy up and cook from it. There are quite a few dishes she recognised from the menu (at the National),and it is all hearty, good Old British food that has just been revamped for todays taste. The book is split into the four seasons and each season contains recipes for starters, mains, desserts and drinks. There are pictures for each recipe but not always of the food, there is a lot of the art work from the National Gallery which ties it in well with the museum. Ok, I like a photo of the food but I also appreciate the paintings and the small description included. Who says you can't be cultured while you're cooking?!
A great treat for a food & art lover....

A feast 25 Nov 2011
By Kentish Woman VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Anyone who has eaten at the National Gallery restaurant will not be surprised by the standard of the book, which is a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. It is beautifully illustrated both with photographs of the dishes themselves and details from paintings from the National Gallery collection.

The recipes themselves are not especially exotic or innovative, but have a certain class - seasonal food cooked to perfection. As a vegetarian, there are a lot of recipes I will not personally use; those I have made however, have been stunners. The whole thing is clearly laid out and well indexed, and just oozes quality.

All in all, highly recommended: it would also be a lovely present for artistic foodie friends - or food loving artists!
