Product Description

"This is a book that every man should read. Morris, with a breathtaking sweep across millennia, first pains an arching overview of civilised society's development. Then, in a style both easy to read and free of pomposity, he examines the male body from hair to feet... But the thrilling thrust of the book is in the compelling conviction with which he orchestrates the human response to the mysterious thud of the rhythm of life" (Sunday Express)

"[An] irresistible blend of hard science and populism" (Sunday Telegraph)

"Witty, informative and closely argued... A treasure trove of such humorous anecdotes, but it has a scholarly tone and a serious purpose" (Daily Mail)

"Persuasive, and often fascinating" (Sunday Times)

"Intriguing" (Big Issue)

Book Description

5.0 out of 5 stars A zoological portrait of an endangered species 20 Dec 2009
In a scientific and dryer style than in `The Naked Ape', Desmond Morris analyzes technically, historically, psychologically, theatrically or psychiatrically all parts of the human body as well as their transformation in the evolution of mankind.

In the process we learn a lot of things.
To sharpen one's appetite, one can find here the answers on the following questions: what part of the male body has the most sex appeal and why? What is a Prince Albert? Why have men testicles outside the abdomen (not for reasons of temperature)? What is a `testical chair'? What's the appeal of long legs? Why are gay men so valuable? What is the real meaning of the term `football'? What is the origin of the term `Adam's Apple'? What is Asphyxiophilia? Why place people their hands over their mouth when they yawn (not out of politeness)? Why are our feet the most honest parts of the whole human body? Why is the ring finger called the `digitus medicus'? How functions the nose as an air-conditioner? What is the strength of a human hair?

This book is a must read for all men and women.

Like all the best teachers Desmond is both informative and entertaining, this book continues the trend. While not Desmond's finest, it's well worth the read. Especially for anyone interested in the human species as a whole, and in particular for anyone who ever wondered why men love sport and sex. It systematically goes through each body part and examines its functionality through its evolution over hundreds of thousands of years.
Some people may be offended by the generality of this book and by our contemporary standards of political correctness this book could be classified as sexist. If you can describe over 3 Billon people in a short novel without being generalist, well then write a book and I'll be the first to buy it. For those who find comments about men having a greater capacity to be more athletic than women sexist, well sometimes the truth hurts.
The current cover is less homoerotic than the original edition, which is a shame. Despite the raised eyebrows I got when I purchased the original, I quickly realised that such preconceptions are exactly what Desmond is aiming at. Bending biology to our current political needs is a bad idea. The Nazi's tried something similar, lucky for us they didn't succeed...

A life changing book. You will never look at people in the same way again. Highly recommended. I first read this book at the age of 25. For me it is an essential book for those who wish to understand own own behaviour and that of others.
