Spain released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: LANGUAGES: English ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), Spanish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), Spanish ( Subtitles ), WIDESCREEN (1.78:1), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: There is nothing like suspecting your husband of murder to add suspense to a marriage, at least that is the case in this standard whodunit with a compelling plot. George Radcliffe (Gary Cooper) testifies in court against a man suspected of murdering George's business partner, absconding with a lot of cash in the process. Several years later, when his wife Martha (Deborah Kerr) is confronted by a blackmailer (Eric Portman) who says her husband murdered his partner, she gets suspicious. George did come into a lot of money just at that time. And to make matters worse, life starts to turn very menacing for the confused and frightened Martha. This was Gary Cooper's last feature film. He succumbed to cancer a few months before The Naked Edge was released. ...The Naked Edge

3.0 out of 5 stars Coop's last film is slack but good to look at. 29 July 2011
Format:DVD
On the face of things, "The Naked Edge" has a pretty good pedigree - scripted by Joesph Stefano ( screenwriter of "Psycho"), directed by the normally-reliable Michael Anderson. It stars the great Gary Cooper ( in his final role ) and the radiant Deborah Kerr with an impressive supporting cast that includes Eric Portman, Dianne Cilento, Peter Cushing and Michael Wilding. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite live up to expectations. For one thing, it doesn't play straight with the audience. We are asked to believe that the dependable Mr. Cooper is a devious opportunist whose wife suspects that he may also be a ruthless killer. Certainly, Coop's odd behaviour does nothing to make her - or the audience - think otherwise.

After testifying in court and sending an innocent man to prison, old Coop and his smooth-talking partner (Michael Wilding)become highly prosperous businessmen. From this point the story takes a number of twists - not all of them plausible - and builds up to " a surprise ending" which the film's producers ask us not reveal to our friends.
Also William Alwyn's musical score is a little too bombastic as if trying to radiate excitement when there isn't any. Michael Anderson's direction is slack and at time indecisive. But the film's photography by Erwin Hiller is always attractive and gives the film a good noirish look.

I have given this three stars only because it's Gary Cooper's last film and if, like me, you are a Cooper enthusiast you'll probably want it in your collection. But it's a pity he couldn't have ended his wonderful career on a better film.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Sad End to a Great Career!! 1 May 2013

What could go wrong? Gary Cooper, Deborah Kerr, Peter Cushing, Michael Wilding, Hermione Gingold - Script by Joseph Stefano, directed by Michael Anderson?? Well, Pretty well everything could and did go wrong. From the truly clunky talky script, to Anderson's pedestrian direction, to the overwhelming music, and dare I say it, the uncomfortable performences from it's 2 leads, and for me anyway (and my wife) great difficulty in understanding Eric Portman's clipped delivery (also the dialogue track is just a bit sibilant). So, was there anything to like. Well, yes. The first 25 minutes, the scenes with Diane Cilento, and..some location shots. I am glad I saw it, no regrets there, I just wish I could have liked it more. The print is good and the price isn't bad, so if you think I might be wrong...Give it a go.
