Book Description

18 Sep 2011

'Children climb piles of discarded furniture and chunks of collapsed building in the alley. Mud and ashen water streaked across their faces. One stands at the top, holding a broken table leg in place of a scepter, shouting that she is Queen of The Struggle. The others scramble towards her, hoping to steal her spot. My stomach clenches at the sound of her declaration, the pang of guilt like rusted metal on my tongue. They don't yet understand that no amount of violence or coercion can replace complacency with the religious fervor sovereignty brings. Their hands are still pristine. The streetlamp flickering alternates their faces between playmate and ghoul.'

Rife with political and religious undertones, By the Nails of the Warpriest follows an unnamed thief who steals memories from the elderly-those who have a a vague memory of The City before The Struggle-and sells them to memory-junkies. He ekes out an existence by ruining the very souls he'd tried to save. As a fallen leader of The People, he's almost thankful that his family is not alive to witness the depths to which he's sunk.

Then he finds a memory that suggests they weren't killed in a riot, that someone lied to him. That someone wants to keep him from his family.

4.0 out of 5 stars Devastating novella 18 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Nik Korpon is a very generous writer, both literally and figuratively. Literally because he has no qualms about giving his work away free for interested readers to try (I got By the Nails of the Warpriest free from Blasted Heaths' website a while back but have also picked up novella Old Ghosts & a collection of Baltimore stories from the authors own website )and figuratively because he packs so much into this work that it feels like a novel three times its length.

Read the blurb for a rundown on what to expect plot wise. Also expect to have your socks blown off by the sheer force of Mr Korpons writing. There isn't a wasted word here - it's a proper grab you by the shirt, rollercoaster ride. Exceptional

4.0 out of 5 stars A future dystopian cult classic 23 Dec 2011
By OzNoir
Format:Kindle Edition
By the Nails of the Warpriest is at once literary, sci-fi, noir and steam punk - the culmination of a dystopian setting fueled by violence and despair yet redeemed by a slither of hope and hint of love. Nik Korpon waxes poetic throughout this ingenious novella with each line complementing the following to add a sense of beauty to a world devoid of all its enchantment. The protagonist, a thief of memories, consists amongst distrust, hopelessness and blood as he forges a future by robbing others of theirs. Little does he know, the former life he held so dear is about to be turned upside down - the revelation sure to ripple all he believes and force his hand at furthering mankind's plight to self destruction.

Nik Korpon is a master of the craft - if 'By the Nails of the Warpriest' is anything to go by his star is well and truly on the rise. While this novella clocks in at under 70pgs, many of its passages will haunt me for a time to come - more so than many full lengths I've read. The page count may be low but the lasting impression is sure to exceed expectation. 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia Slosh 12 Jun 2013

Memory. It's what compels and confines us. It is the soot that traces our footprints and the whispers from old ghosts who refuse to dissipate. Scars and stories speed-loaded. Dead leaves bound to the skin beneath our nails. With it, we will never escape ourselves. Without it, we could never be ourselves. Memory is commodity, memory is curse. As fluid as it is unmalleable, memory is forever tethered to the nebulous present. In order to change the factual past, we must look to the sci-fi future. Just ask the Warpriest.

A quick read with nary a sentence wasted, dropping the reader en medias res. Many breathtaking passages assaulting the senses make this Nik's best yet, in my opinion.
5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Nik Korpon pieces. 1 Jun 2013

From what I hear, top secret, this will be expanded. So keep an eye out for that.

This is one of my absolute favorite Nik Korpon pieces. This novella pulls you in from the very first pages, and immerses you in dark fantasy, neo-noir mayhem, and visceral, palpating violence. Expect more greatness from Nik Korpon in the near future. He's an author to keep an eye on.
