witty and light, which makes this a very fast read, one that leaves you wanting even more by the end

Review

"The naked truth about innovation is ugly, funny, and eye-opening, but it sure isn't what most of us have come to believe. With this book, Berkun sets us free to try to change the world unencumbered with misconceptions about how innovation happens." - Guy Kawasaki, author of The Art of the Start "Insightful, inspiring, evocative, and just plain fun to read it's totally great." - John Seely Brown, former Chief Scientist of Xerox, and Director, Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC); current Chief of Confusion --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I really enjoyed this book. Scott has a great writing style - friendly and informative, well suited to the task in hand. What could have been a dull history of innovation has been turned into a short, punchy work. He manages to pack a great deal into the 192 pages; examples of how innovation works, where innovation comes from, and debunks several popular myths of innovation, pointing out that whilst there is a 'eureka' moment, there's a whole lot of hard work which lead up to it in the first place.

I read this book on a train journey, and found myself picking back through it on the return journey. It's jam-packed with interesting anecdotes and information. Inspirational too - it put the idea of writing and where ideas come from in a new light.

Recommended reading. Top stuff.

We now live in an innovation economy. Actually that's a myth - we've always lived in an innovation economy it's just not been called that. Innovation is an odd word. It's currently wildly overused, usually instead of novelty, and is in severe danger of becoming yet another piece of marketing glibness. However innovation is something that is strived for in an attempt to make things better, faster more productive and all that other good stuff. Will The Myths Of Innovation teach you how to become innovative? No it won't. No book can teach you that. What it will do though is help dismantle some of the pernicious mythology that surround innovation and in the process teach you some much more important lessons. The threads running though it are deeply pragmatic and strongly promote getting out of the meeting room and into the workshop. By the end of the book, if your anything like me, you'll have forgotten all about the "i" word and instead taken on board the central thrust of 'do good stuff and solve problems and if that means you innovate that's an interesting side effect'. This may not be what you're hoping for but it seems to me that it's immeasurably more useful than any six step programme to innovative thinking you might find elsewhere.

In terms of reading The Myths Of Innovation is quite light and easy going. The chapters are all very self contained and as a whole it reads much more like a collection of essays on a general theme than a properly structured book. Whether this format agrees with you is very much down to personal choice. Personally I liked it as there was no flipping back and forth between chapters to re-check previous information. The final four chapters (an addition over the previous edition) seem a little disjointed as they don't follow the myth-busting theme of the rest of the book but venture into creativity and pitching ideas. I actually found these the weakest part of the book as it felt a little bit like after all the "no-one can teach you innovation" of the main book there was a final attempt to teach innovation and could have happily done without them. Still, all in all I would say The Myths Of Innovation is well worth the read and is probably a book I'll dip back into many times.

In the Myths of innovation Scott Berkun analysis the what works and doesn't work in creating innovative products.

He looks at the Myths that surround innovation and breaks the process down to a pragmatic guide to creating the space to be a more productive innovator. Written in a relaxed style you'll plough though the book in no time at all, and come away inspired.

Anyone who want to go further in software/product/web design should read this book.

Also, don't forget to read the Colophon as with all of Scott's writing it's a treat.
