Gary Crew is one of the foremost Australian writers of thought-provoking children's picture books, teenage fiction and young adult fiction and has won many awards. Crew is around sixty years of age but didn't begin writing until the mid-1980s, in response to a need for appropriate reading material for his school students. Several of his books are based on fact, and "The Mystery Of Eilean Mor" is one of them. It is based on the unsolved disappearance, in 1900, of the three keepers of the lighthouse on Eilean Mor, a remote island of the East Hebrides. Gary Crew has collaborated with numerous illustrators, and in this case the work of Jeremy Geddes is both beautiful and evocative.
