"The book would be an ideal resource for a liturgy committee or parish scripture study group that might come together to reflect on the liturgical season. What Keating does in this book, ideally, is what every homilist should do also. He weaves together the Scripture proclaimed, the mystery that the liturgy celebrates, and the everyday life of the people assembled. When that weaving is done with a contemplative, sacramental imagination, the mutual presence of Christ and those gathered has the power to transform the world." -Rite --,
About the Author
Father Thomas Keating is known throughout the world as an exponent, teacher, and writer on contemplative prayer. A Cistercian (Trappist) monk of St. Benedict's Monastery, Snowmass, Colorado, he is a founder of the Centering Prayer Movement and of Contemplative Outreach. He is the author of numerous books, particularly of the trilogy Open Mind, Open Heart; Invitation to Love; and The Mystery of Christ. Among his most recent books is The Daily Reader for Contemplative Living, compiled by S. Stephanie Iachetta.
This book reads well cover-to-cover but is also an excellent reference book. It was as the later that I purchased my copy having read a borrowed copy from a friend some months before. If everyone has significant books in their lives that can be counted on the fingers of one hand this is book number two for me. Three books to go if you get my drift. I was familiar with the author and was intrigued by the sub title "The Liturgy as Spiritual Experience" So took time to read it (annual leave). This is not heavy but does call for a contemplative read. I stopped and started a lot and considered little else at the time. Fr Thomas Keating is a man of prayer. I say this to qualify his writing and to encourage you to consider everything he writes in this book. There are no redundant words or phrases, no vague examples, no blurred illustrations, no humour for humour sake (though there is humour) and no sense Fr Keating is trying to prove anything here. It was very much my experience Fr Keating was kindly and carefully communicating for the sake of the reader. This is where I honestly laughed out loud. To speak of the profoundest things with such ordinary illustrations by way of explanation in such common language was delicious. Like a stand up comedian without the obscenities or swearing. I loved it. The book is simply laid out with a logical schematic and the minimum of introduction. The introduction is excellent. To cover the territory it does so simply in 10 pages are phenomenal and very much worth reading and rereading. The Introduction alone will convince you of Fr Keating's efficiency and proficiency as a writer. The Book may presume a degree of knowledge and experience from the reader of Catholicism, Liturgy and contemplative prayer. As a 51 year old, Happily practising Catholic, this is hard to tell as this is already familiar territory for me but I do think it has great value far beyond any specific readership while of immeasurable value to any Happy Catholic. In my opinion, essential Catholic reading. The revelation for me was Fr Keating's reflections on the Liturgical year. Wow! The reading was a Spiritual experience in its self. How could I have lived through 51 of these and missed so much? Like growing up with a sibling who insisted they always be seen in full costume and makeup only to suddenly change their minds. Shocking though oddly familiar. This book has helped me find a new definition for the Terrors of Hell. One long Liturgy without Spiritual experience. Thankfully this is not my experience and if it is not yours this book will go a long way in explaining what has been happening to us. For this I shall be eternally grateful to Fr Keating and his excellent book. I highly recommend it. Finally I would suggest the use of this book as a reference as one moves through the different seasons of the Liturgical year. I have just done this for the first time with the current season and am having the best Advent, Christmas and Epiphany of my life. At last I get it.

5.0 out of 5 starsA Wonderful Reflection31 Oct 2000
By Steven K. Szmutko - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
THE MYSTERY OF CHRIST is a marvelous, contemplative exploration of the mysteries of Catholic Liturgy as reflected in the central themes of Christianity throughout the year. There are certain rhythms to every season, whether in nature or in worship. The author captures a deep appreciation for these abiding themes and presents them as central to our faith and indeed, our personal spirituality.
The book is well organized around the central themes of Advent/Christmas, Lent/Easter, Pentecost and Ordinary Time and integrates the various topics with the nature of centering prayer and contemplative prayer. The prose is rich in meaning, yet is easily read, making it a useful reference throughout the year. The book is just one of Thomas Keating's fine books, OPEN MIND, OPEN HEART and INVITATION TO LOVE being two others well worth the time.

5.0 out of 5 starsFresh insights on timeless truths27 Mar 2000

Father Keating's haunting, exquisite reflections on the Scriptures and liturgy bring new depth and freshness to passages one may have heard a hundred times - but which, with each chapter, seem refreshingly new. For example, his treatment of the Annunciation, John the Baptist, and the parable of the Prodigal Son, and the continuing call to holiness in each incident, presented beautiful truths in an engaging, casual, and deceptively simple style. Father Keating's words about the "double bind" (doing God's will when two "callings" seem contrary), which he applies to the Passion of Christ itself, are intense food for thought, and he skillfully presents them in terms which are very easy to understand. Excellent work for anyone interested in the spiritual life.

I use this book more than any other when I am planning classes on spirituality, liturgy, Scripture study or prayer. It invites us to experience the mystery of how Christ is present in our own lives. It is clearly written. It is an excellent starting point for planning Advent, Lent, and Easter liturgies or retreats. I read it as if it were a map that that describes what I may encounter as I attempt to follow Christ. Students have been enthusiastic in praising this book because of its clarity and the insights it offers.
