Review

"Pargeter has established a reputation as one of the best current analysts of Islamic radicalism. This book - detailed, authoritative, sober, perceptive and meticulously researched - shows why ... A must read for scholars, students and anyone interested in the Middle East." --Jason Burke

"Alison Pargeter s book on the Brotherhood was published to critical acclaim in 2010 ... Using both interviews and written sources, it provided a level-headed survey of an elusive Pan-Islamic organization that has been part of the Arab political landscape since Hassan al-Banna founded it 80 years ago. Now a well-timed paperback edition with a new final chapter offers some penetrating insights on the two dramatic years in which the Brotherhood moved from opposition to power." --Ian Black, Guardian

"A tour de force - This well-written and much-needed book by a respected British scholar admirably traces the origins and development, internal debates and frictions, geographical spread - and abiding contradictions - of a movement that, despite its ambiguities and shortcomings, remains very much a force to be reckoned with." --Alan George, University of Oxford

"Highly recommended, especially to those who see radical Islam, Jihadism, Wahhabism, Salafism and Islamism as one huge monolith and all equally to be feared." --New Statesman

"Pargeter is a brilliant and clear-eyed analyst of Islamic radicalism and never resorts to scaremongering." --Ian Pindar, the Guardian

Product Description

A new, fully updated edition of this critically acclaimed title featuring a new chapter covering the 'Arab Spring' and the Egyptian parliamentary and presidential elections. This is an authoritative analysis, in which Alison Pargeter follows the twists and turns of the Muslim Brotherhood as it battled through the years of oppression under authoritarian regimes to finally become a key and legitimate political actor. From Egypt and Syria to Tunisia and Libya, the Brotherhood and its affiliates are now faced with the complex task of transforming themselves from semi-clandestine opposition movements into legitimate political actors and, in some cases, into ruling powers. ‘Authoritative, sober, perceptive … A must read’ Jason Burke. ‘A tour de force’ Alan George, University of Oxford. ‘A highly lucid and approachable analysis of the Brotherhood’ Richard Phelps, Perspectives on Terrorism. ‘Highly recommended’ New Statesman.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful History of Key Player 22 Feb 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is an informative guide to one of the organisations that has played a key role in the recent events in the Middle East. As an international movement that has considerable national autonomy, a movement that has been frequently outlawed and has had internal conflicts between the militants and those wanting to compromise with power, a preaching organisation with political ambitions, whose conservative message plays well with the rural peasantry and yet who has sided with the progressive urban liberals, it is a difficult group for outsiders to understand. In this relatively brief book Alison Pargeter gives a useful overview of its history and where it is today.

This edition finishes before Morsi was removed from power in Egypt (after the Brotherhood overplayed its hand by trying to rule by decree). Hence the subtitle is now somewhat misleading - it is now from opposition to power and back to opposition again. No doubt this will be amended in a future edition.

One slight quibble is that Islamic concepts (such as 'dawa') are sometimes used in the book with little or no introduction, requiring a little bit of research elsewhere to understand the text fully.
