4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but limited 26 May 2012
By Jack
I didn't realise that when I was buying this that the staves already have clefs on them. This is useful if you are writing for voice, piano and guitar. The pages are laid out well: the vocal part's stave has three lines underneath, which make it easy to add lyrics; the guitar part is in tab which makes it easier to write chords and higher notes without having to count ledger lines and the piano part, as you would expect, is a simple treble and bass clef. The quotes from famous musicians are interesting.

However, this makes it tricky to write for any other arrangement of instruments, so it is very limiting. Although I suppose I cannot moan too much because I didn't use the look inside feature that would have clearly shown me this.

Despite this it is a very good 'notebook' and will come in handy, I am sure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every composer needs a notebook... 18 April 2009
By G
And this is the one to get.

I carry this book wherever I go, and thanks to its simple layout of staves and writing space, I can easily refer to my ideas. The paper is good quality, and the quotes on each page are inspirational. I love its antique look, but it never tries to be over-the-top with the art design, or over-commanding with its sectioning.

This book is good for orchestral writing, but i feel it's aimed at more pop song writing. Each page is largely manuscript, and has 10 guitar chord diagrams, and below, two groups of staves containing the following: a treble clef stave (for the melodies), then some writing space below (presumably for the lyrics, but I use this space for my notes), a treble/bass stave, and lastly a tablature stave.

All in all, a fancy looking notebook that does its job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely music notebook 19 July 2010
By R
I bought this to use with my Music degree. I love the way the paper is laid out giving plenty of space for writing notes or words for songs as well as three staves for music. Plus the attractive cover makes me feel inspired! Because of the size (it is like a thin exercise book), it is very portable so I can jot down ideas on the bus. Recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Musician's Notebook 16 Sep 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a great notebook for anyone who wants to write music - each doublepage has guitar chord boxes, guitar tablature, plus staff for voice/melody, treble staff, bass staff and lines for lyrics. There are also quotes from musicians to inspire and amuse. The whole feel of the book is great, with parchment like paper and good quality - plus a notes section at the back of the book. I find it useful for my children's music teacher to write down anything they need to practice during the week and write homework, as well as for them to try to compose small turnes for themselves. It is ideal for adults and children alike, whatever instrument they/you play and would make a great gift for any budding musician. There is also a deluxe version newly available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book 20 Nov 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The manuscript book is actually for more advanced students of music as it also provides spaces for guitar chords and tabs, however each page also has a witty comment from some of the music greats that have been an inspiration for me to keep up my lessons and show that was I am doing is achievable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy layout 19 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is great for composition because you have room to write melody line, words, and treble and bass accompaniment - really good for songwriting in particular. I like its small size, though combined with the three stave structure it does mean you can't get more than about eight bars to a page so if you're prolific you'd probably need a stack of these little notebooks!

3.0 out of 5 stars ok
It's ok but it's more for guitarists, don't buy this is you want to write purely for piano (like I did).

3.0 out of 5 stars not enough writing space
It's fine but you could only really fit one or two songs in it. Nice for a beginner but not a musician.
