Reviews

Although the film received mostly poor reviews in India, it received the Presidential Award in New Delhi for best film. New Statesmanfilm critic John Coleman compared Ray to Jean Renoir. Marie Seton said that the film "challenged the whole convention of songs and dances in Indian cinema. Audiences...conditioned to the introduction of songs and dances as entertainment interludes and [as] dramatic and romantic stresses, had never before been confronted with...classical singing and dancing as integral focal points of rea;istic sequences."[4] John Russell Taylor said that the film was "one of ray's most masterly films, exquisitely photographed and directed with a complete, unquestioning mastery of mood...For those willing to place themselves under its hypnotic spell it offers pleasures of unique delicasy.

4.0 out of 5 stars End of an era 14 July 2010

Format:DVD
This is one of my favourite films but you have to love Bengali/Indian cinema. This is not Bollywood but a simple and moving story about the last of a kind, an old aristocrat who makes a last flamboyant gesture before he and his kind pass into history. It may not be "politically correct" but it has truth. Acting, photography and music are superb.

First I need to tell you that this is not a film for fun. Not at all. It is even a sad film. A man's feodal style life drops little by little and he does not realize that. At the same time new rich people come up in the society but they are just rich and don't know what music and culture are...

Then the only dear thing that the life left for our man is his son but even that would not remain...

There is a moment in the film that a female singer is singing a very deeply sad song and the noble people are listening with respect while a new rich man can not behave in good manners...Devdas [2002]
