5.0 out of 5 stars A GLIMPSE OF HEAVEN ON EARTH 10 Dec 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I found this finely produced/generously filled -but budget price- album a superb disc of the world-renowned English Cathedral choral tradition at its very best.
Amongst the items is perhaps the most atmospheric recording I have yet to hear of the famous Allegri'Misereri'- the lone boy treble's 'high C's' floating -haunting and mesmerising- beautifully up and around Wren's massive dome.
As well as famous anthems -all given complete-, there are well-loved hymns such as "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" and "The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended" -all with wonderful descants.
Although the sound is perhaps rather hard (Wren's massive Portland stone building and ambience) nevertheless, the disc somehow remains intensely beautiful.
The cover picture is misleading -it is in fact the full choir (men and boys) rather than merely the trebles as photographed.
With complete texts enclosed, I doubt if there can be a better bargain at any price for anyone wishing to sample (or to give to a friend) the beauty of heaven-inspired music -surely the English Cathedral tradition at its very finest.

5.0 out of 5 stars I was Glad ! 20 Sep 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
This CD contains 5 anthems, 2 Evening Services, a psalm, 4 hymns, an organ work and Allegri's "Miserere". Only the organ piece by Dupre seems out of place (but it is only just over 2 minutes long). All lovers of Church music will appreciate this CD. John Scott, the Music Director, has honed a fine choir here in his 21 years in the job. It is hard to pick out highlights as all the tracks are well performed, but I especially enjoyed the "Miserere", the Stanford Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in C, Balfour Gardiner's "Evening Hymn" and Maurice Bevan's setting of the hymn "There's a wideness in God's mercy".

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect spiritual relaxation 10 Mar 2003
This recording is the perfect introduction to a wide range of sacred choral pieces. The performances are great; especially the ethereal rendition of 'The Lord is my Shepherd', the glorious 'I Was Glad' and the mesmerising Evening Service in C by Stanford - the Nunc Dimittis is outstanding. This CD is a wonderful accompaniment to a relaxed Sunday afternoon - pour yourself a cup of coffee (or better still a large glass of red wine), surround yourself with the Sunday papers, sit back, put on this CD and enjoy!
