4.0 out of 5 stars Second book in the DI Charlie Priest Series 20 Dec 2007
By J. Chippindale TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Stuart Pawson had a career as a mining engineer He followed this with a spell working for the probation service, before he became a full-time writer. He lives in the pleasant waterside village of Fairburn in Yorkshire. A well known haunt for bird watchers from far and wide.

Stuart Pawson has a gem of a character in Charlie Priest, a copper's copper with the tenacity of a bull terrier and the staying power of a steeple chaser. Not much gets past Charlie Priest and the books featuring him are a joy to read. The dry wit of the author transmitted through his lead character is typical of Yorkshire and his storylines are based on the way a detective would approach a case, rather than the crash bang wallop type writing of many so called crime writers.

This is one of the early offerings of the author, but his writing is consistently good right through from his earliest books to the present and not one has disappointed me so far. Living within a 10 mile radius of where most of the books are set is of course a benefit and makes them that little more atmospheric for me personally. However it would not matter if I lived in Timbuktu the books are still extremely readable and entertaining.

PS: The last time I looked the rhubarb sheds were still there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every new one gets better 11 Dec 2004
Format:Paperback
Stuart Pawson is one of the country's best writers in the 'police' genre. He is also under rated and under exposed. He writes about what he knows and the humour is typical Yorkshire. The rhubarb sheds actually existed and maybe still do! Charlie Priest is the type of copper we would all like to know, human, trustworthy and sincere. Eventhough this book is an early one it is well worth reading again. The later books are just as good if not better. Stuart Pawson is a consistently good author and I'm just waiting for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review of Stuart Pawson 21 Aug 2007
Format:Paperback
Having read my way through Rankin. Robinson, Harvey, Hurley and Billingham, I didn't like the idea of a detective novel written primarily in the first person. However, Pawson creates a great character with a sense of humour, but I feel lacks a little depth, ie not quite enough about his own personal enviroment such as Rebus or Banks.

Format:Paperback
A cleverly crafted crime novel that tackles sensitive subjects in a true to life representation, not that we wish for these events to happen, without sensationalising or glamorising the subject matter or characters involved. It would be quite easy to believe that the story is a retelling of actual events and the effect on the victim/s, perpetrator and the investigating crime professionals.
In an age where over dramatisation and exaggeration of the even the smallest fact, this novel is a leap into reality and for a lay person which I am; I would suspect that this novel reflects detective work more closely than most novels or that of TV dramas.
If you like the crime novel that follows a single crime or concentrates on the key detective and his/her personality at the expense of the overall story then this book is not for you.
If you like the intricate weave of characters, events and a plot that takes you on a journey into the unknown like a trip to spaghetti junction, where you think you know where you are going yet end up being amazed at your final destination then this is a novel for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Northern humour with dead bodiies. 16 May 2013

Stuart Lawson writes a good crime story, but also makes me laugh. What an excellent combination. This book does not disappoint. Charlie Priest would be so good on a television series played by the right northern actor.
