Five grand for a couple of hours work?

It seems easy money, but the deal ex-mercenary Max Iversson is chasing has gone disastrously wrong. Two of his friends are dead. And now he wants to find out who's behind their killings.

Detective Sergeant John Gallan is also looking for answers. He's investigating the fatal poisoning of a nightclub doorman. But leads are scarce and, when they do appear, so do bodies.

What neither man knows is that they are heading towards a devastating confrontation that will see one of them staring down the wrong end of a gun.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring back Iversson 2 July 2007
Format:Paperback
Another winner. I have only just discovered author Simon Kernick's work after picking up RELENTLESS the other month in paperback, and after demolishing that in record time, I just came on Amazon and ordered 3 copies of his other books. This book will not disapoint, told in a unique and brave dual first person narrative, you get to be in the head of ex-soldier and Met. Copper - I really liked the Iversson character, as he sort of reminded me of Andy McNabs "Nick". It is great to discover a new writer and have his back catalog to go at. Just as you are getting sick of American crime novels along comes a homegrown talent that really knows how to spin a gritty British crime caper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever, Original and Entertaining 3 Dec 2003
Format:Hardcover
This is a cleverly told thriller coming from a first person perspective, but it’s a little bit different than usual because the perspective alternates between two characters. This is achieved by changing perspective from chapter to chapter with the title of the chapter given to the character doing the talking. It’s also following a timeline that counts down to a zero hour scenario that gives the feeling of building to a tremendous crescendo. It’s very effective.

The two men telling the story are Max Iversson and John Gallan. Max Iversson is a former soldier, first with the army and then as a mercenary who now works as a personal bodyguard. He finds himself wanted by the police when a protection job goes horribly wrong. He realises he had been set up and wasn’t supposed to have survived and now is desperate to find out who set him up and why, while still avoiding apprehension by the law. John Gallan is that law, working as a Detective Sergeant in CID; he is trying to investigate an unrelated murder when Iversson’s name and business begin popping up throughout the investigation.

Mixed into the story and the lives of the two protagonists is an organised rime family, the Holtz family, and as with most stories involving organised crime, drugs, prostitutes and violence make their appearance. Iversson is pretty sure that it was the Holtz family that was involved in the set up, so he’s trying to find out why, as well as working out a way to get some sort of revenge. Gallan is pretty sure the Holtz family was somehow involved in the murder that he is working on and so he begins to tangle with them....

I like my thrillers to come with a fast-paced storyline carrying plenty of action sequences, which usually equates to full on violence. This book certainly fills that bill. The bad guys are ruthless, so are some of the good guys providing a no-holds-barred battle to the death. It’s a terrific follow up to Kernick’s first book, The Business of Dying, with a character or two making a return appearance here. Read more ›

2.0 out of 5 stars Meh! 11 Feb 2009
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I can't quite believe how many positive reviews this piece of violent, predictable tosh has received. I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them, but this one was awful. It was blatantly obvious from the outset who was setting the main character up, and who helped them along the way. I think we were supposed to somehow consider Iversson to be some sort of anti-hero but I just thought he was an irritating pain in the backside who blamed everybody but himself for his bad fortune (which he mostly brought on himself but some frankly ridiculous decisions). Of course, if he'd just gone to the police in the first place (as, let's face it, anyone in reality would have) this book would've been a lot shorter and I would be spending those few hours it took to read it doing something more useful.

On a positive note, I did like the character of Gallan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Getting Better All The Time. 30 July 2004
Format:Paperback
I really enjoyed "The Business Of Dying", Simons first book. The question was, could he maintain or even improve those high standards? Well the "Murder Exchange" answers that with a resounding yes! So much so today I buy his third book & look forward to number four. Mr. Kernick is in the same league as Jake Arnott, & Mark Billingham: & by anyones standards that is well impressive company.
A truly atmospheric, clever, edge of the seat thriller; wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Read 26 Nov 2003
Format:Hardcover
Kernick has delivered again. A gripping read and well developed characters. Although not for the faint-hearted, Kernick's wry humour shines through this gritty portrayal of underworld intrigue and murder. Thoroughly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as his newer stuff 9 May 2011
By Best Books To Read TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am slowly working my way through Simon Kernick's books and this is the second book he released. Simon Kernick has a very certain type of writing style. His books are usually very fast paced and normally it takes only a matter of a chapter or two before you are thrown in at the deep end of a story.

This book followed the same format and we dive straight into Max Iversson's bad decision and when it all goes wrong. However, although you are thrown in at the deep end very quickly, the suspense level is not as high as I am used to with a Kernick book. I think this is a sure sign of the amount of time he has been writing. The fact that I read his newer stuff first and have gone back to his older work has the disadvantage of showing his weaker points at the beginning of his career.

Although slightly weaker than usual the story itself was a good one. Max Iversson was a great character, and although he usually stays within the law, he finds himself inadvertently being drawn over to the other side in his fight for the truth.

John Gallan was also a pretty good character and although the typical `copper' we see in books, there was no glossing over his very mundane personal life which actually brought more realism to the book in my eyes. We flit between characters by chapter and as the story progresses you see more and more of each one and they eventually overlap.

Other characters making a brief appearance is Tina Boyd (who appears in later Kernick books) as well as the Holtz family who are a central part of the plot. As ever there is no holding back on the levels of violence and gore, although it's all done in keeping with the story.

As usual towards the end we pick up even more pace before getting to the climax and pretty good ending.
