Book Description

3 Sep 2007
It is 1985 - Thatcher in power, Sade on the radio, print workers on strike,
Live Aid and mullet hair dos on the street. Into all of this, come seven
men...
Thimble, Gudger, Dave, Fred The Shoe, O'sh, Alfie and Bax.

These fella's meet for free flowing banter and alcohol of the highest
quality every Sunday. On one of these Sunday's, something strange occurs. A
man approaches their table and asks them if they want to buy a horse.

From that simple but surreal question unfolds the story of The Mumper, the
tale of seven firm friends who embark on a unique journey.

They would like to invite you along for the ride as well. So saddle up and
climb aboard......The Mumper is here to take you away.

What's a Mumper I hear you ask? It's an old English word for a Ponce or
Scrounger, as in "You're a Mumper son". The story of The Mumper is set in
1985, and features seven South London Characters who get involved in life
dreams and schemes. On one page you'll cry laughing...on another page
you'll cry your eye's out. It's all in here... Life, Death and everything
in between.

Review

Its a funny, moving, lyrical account beautifully written in the argot of south east London. I can't recommend it highly enough
Matthew Norman - 12th October 2007 -- The London Evening Standard

Mate, your books f*cking unbelievably good! Just read the last horse race. My heart's beating. You got to write another book! -- P.Wallace, Sunderland

"F***ing loved it. Does bring to mind the Colin MacInnes London
Trilogy .. with, of course, Absolute Beginners at top of the threesome.
It's that fast pace style, with the characters rather than the plot leading
the way. Certainly a jazzy, street-wise style to it.

4/5, Highly Recommended -- Mike Cobley New Leaf Media www.magazine.brighton.co.uk May 2007

An Ealing comedy for the 21st Century -- Martin Freeman , North London

Finished your book ,it was great! I laughed and cried some times at the same time!
I cried so much at your description of how you felt went you found out about your dad's illness and how you all coped with it, and when they
brought the Mumper to the funeral oh my god that was so touching!
-- Lisa James, London

Really enjoyed it mate, a real page turner. The characters were three dimensional and the references were spot on, found myself laughing out loud at times and nodding my head in agreement whenever there was a blinding reference i.e. Only South Londoners wear brown shoes. -- M.Murphy, Kent

So, I parted with my tenner, and I took a deep breath and opened the latest book by Mark Baxter and Paolo.
Well, I am pleased and relieved to report that the book is a gem, a blinder, proper job.
From the attention grabbing first sentence, to the neat and uplifting ending, this book is a treat. It's a story of friendship and trust, of risk and reward, of growing up and growing old. It's a story about how when our world turns upside down it's the familiar that brings us comfort and it's laughter that keeps us going. And there are plenty of laughs; this book is laugh out loud funny.
These characters quickly became this reader's friends as the genuine affection with which they are written is infectious, their wit irresistible and I defy you not to chuckle and love them too. Even the incidental characters cracked me up, including an artistically tempered decorator . . . with builder's block; and a barmaid described as having "the voice that launched a thousand raffles".
This is not a long book, but the whole of life is there and it cracks along at a fair pace. I read it in a few days and apologise to my fellow tube travellers for the giggling (and crying at one point) as I followed my new pals on their adventure. I hear that other readers have missed their bus stops and are demanding a sequel. Now that's what I call feedback. -- Lil James, West Midlands

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST READ EVER! 23 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback
The Mumper is as good as it gets -
The fact that it is a true story
gives it an added bonus! Certainly,
in these bleak days of 'me,myself & I'
it is a refreshing story of human nature
at it's best!Friendship over adversity!
Life,Love and the jolly boys! The book has a
1960's mod feel to it (although it's set in the 80's)
You will feel all the better for reading it,and I guarantee
you will laugh out loud at the antics of this wonderful group of characters!

5.0 out of 5 stars I've been mumped 6 Feb 2011

What a cracking read.I dont read many books but being from Sarf of the river and 'real wall' i just had to have a look.
Had me gripped from start to finish and great memories of the pains of following Millwall and the Union troubles with murdock and thatcher.
More importantly the wonderfull accounts of the camaraderie between a group of mates and drinking buddies of all ages.
Great twist at the end.Well done for a great read and hopefully a great film to follow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Would you Adam 'n' Eve it ! 7 Oct 2007
Format:Paperback
Another brilliant book by Mark Baxter & Paolo Hewitt. The Mumper is a "honest as the day is long" book about a group of friends, good friends, the type we'd all like as ours. It takes you through a period of their lives that is packed with emotions at either end of the spectrum.....and everything in between. A truely wonderful, very reflective book about their lives........take a ride on The Mumper you won't be disapointed.
