'I give this book so many stars, that I would use up too much paper. An excellent book!' Scholastic Literacy Time Plus.

Product Description

When Kit Salter and her friends peek at a famed mummy in a museum chamber, they are shocked to discover rattles and moans coming from the box . . . Inside is an Egyptian stowaway, determined to return a looted scarab and save his village. When the mummy is stolen too, the ensuing adventures puts the children fast on the heels of a villainous East End mob, and right into the heart of the Western Desert. But as the story climaxes in a temple, the villains and Kit find they have underestimated a stronger force - the terrible power of ancient Egypt . . . A fabulous first book in an exciting series set during the Age of Empire. Book Two, The Maharajah's Monkey, is set in India. Book Three, The Book of Bones is set in China. In each story the children will battle to outwit their arch rivals: the ghastly Baker Brothers, collectors linked with slavery and opium running.

By Jack M
Format:Paperback
This is certainly a good choice for younger children as the plot is straightforward and so is accessible to any less confident reader in the family. Older children, and adults, are likely to find the plot a little simple. However, Natasha Narayan writes in a style that keeps the story moving along and keeps the reader interested, although there are no great surprises in the plot. Kit is also an engaging heroine but is in no way a realistic Victorian character! But that said, fun nonetheless.

My two children really enjoyed the book, they couldn't wait each night for the next chapter. Perfect for adventure loving girls (and boys).

Cracking adventure 22 Mar 2009
Format:Hardcover
My daughter sat down and read this book in one go. A Victorian adventure following Kit Salter and her buddies across the empire to Egypt in search of the oldest book in the world, this story was a rollicking page-turner and - judging by the laughter coming through the wall long after she was meant to be asleep in bed - packs a few good jokes too. Looking forward to the next one.
