For his breakthrough into the blockbuster big time, director Stephen Sommers (Deep Rising) was determined to avoid the hackneyed Hollywood Mummy clichés of flailing bandages, somnambulant zombies and wooden acting. If you're happy to settle for two out of three then the finished film could be your cup of Egyptian tea, fully delivering on its visual promise, but occasionally mired in a quicksand of stilted dialogue and plot contrivance.
When disgraced high priest Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo) is awoken from his ancient prison, he unleashes his vengeful wrath in a whirl of computer-generated pestilence and plagues, all devised by the effects wizards at George Lucas' Industrial Light and Magic. No gory detail is spared as the mummy sets about rebuilding his decayed body and reviving his forbidden lover, aided by hordes of swarming, flesh-eating scarabs and an army of the dead. Among the more human cast, Brendan Fraser (Blast from the Past, George of the Jungle) brings an infectious Boys' Own enthusiasm to his Indiana-Jones-style adventurer, while such supporting players as Rachel Weisz and John Hannah are mostly eclipsed by the spectacle on offer. Ultimately, The Mummy is great fun and offers digital thrills ideally suited to the DVD format which will wow even the most CGI-sated viewer.
On the DVD: commendably, the extras on this DVD are on a par with the Region One offering, including deleted scenes and director's commentary, and both picture and sound quality are excellent. Most interestingly, veteran ILM effects supervisor John Berton presents step-by-step guides to some of the film's most extraordinary CGI shots, from early animatics to 3-D modelling and compositing. There's also the obligatory "making of" programme, in which everyone insists their primary concern was to ensure the effects never superseded the story. If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version of The Mummy is spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.
The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want good old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun, The Mummy ranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999. --Jenny Brown

The Mummy is not a particularly demanding movie, but then as an action-adventure, what do you expect? What it is, is well-paced, well-made and very entertaining. There are good action set-pieces, a fantastic bad guy in Imhotep (who I'm sure is really a big softy, I mean, come one, the guy's scared of cats) and some pretty gruesome creatures on display.
The one thing I find disappointing about this movie, unlike many people, are the special effects. I think they look decidedly ropey in places, falling into the trap of 'looking CGI', which is not good. This is not always the case, some of the effects are utterly superb, but on occasion they are extemely disappointing; for example, the 'goo' that appears out of the pool in the mummy's tomb and some of the shots of the mummy himself.
As a DVD, there is some good content. Lots of background on Egypt and its history, plenty on the effects (perhaps too much), plus some reasonable biogs of cast and crew. Pretty good value, and a great movie to boot.

If pure entertainment is your thing then you don't need to look any further than the mummy. It's a film that sets out quite simply to entertain, and succeds.
Their are several aspects of this film that i enjoyed. The introduction is tremendous, as a narrator sets up the film, telling the viewer the story of Imhotep and how he came to be mummified. Throughout the film there are some spectacular visual images and some of the most memorable occur in this opening section of the film.
As the characters are introduced the pace and the mood of the film change greatly. We are introduced to three more important characters. Rick 'o Conell, an Indiana Jones style adventurer, evelyn, a clumsy but attractive and keen character desperate to live up to the reputation of her adventurer parents, and her brother johnathon desperate to find some treasure with as little danger and adventure as possible.
Their is a tremendous chemistry between the members of the cast. They all seem to have a naturally established banter between them and this comes across well on screen as there is a lot of good humour. You get the impression that everyone involved had a great time making the movie. I also really enjoyed the support acting of the jailor "He's going to be hanged. Apparently, he had a very good time".
Many of the CGi scenes are impressive despite one or two times when it is a little over the top as other reviewers mentioned, but those moments are rare. I like my CGI to loook impressive and colourful but realistic, which is achieved here most of the time. The famous face of Imohtep apperaing from the sand and regeneration of the character from decomposistion to a completley human body are both very impressive.
Their are one or two scary moments in the movie but by no means is it a horror movie. Although i did find the scene where an American adventurer has his eyes and tounge removed by Imhotep to be quite disturbing.
As other reviewers mentioned their is also a small romantic sub-plot between 'O Connel and Evelyn, but lets not forget that the basic plot of the film is romantic as Imhotep hopes to ressurect his long dead lover, though this backbone of the film does get forgotten as you get into the story, until the exiting ending.
All in all this a fantastic movie made complete by a great story, good direction, some impressive CGI and most of all some very enthustiatic and enjoyable acting. The best adventure movie Hollywood has produced since thev Indiana Jones trilogy>

... Well, maybe not, but this film is awesome! I bought it on video after vaguely recalling seeing it when I was eleven. I must have watched in every day for the following two weeks.
It's a sort of horror-comedy, but I'd say that it was much funnier than it was scary, full of hilarious one-liners. The actors are all perfect for their roles, though some are better than others, such as Kevin J. O'Connor, sneakily taking a sidekick role and upstaging all the big stars in every scene he's in, bless him.
In short, I love it, and it's my favourite movie ever. Buy it, preferably the ultimate edition version for all the cool extra stuff. I'm not so great at reviews, but I hope I've shown you the light.

The Mummy dvd
I watched this film on tv and really enjoyed it,so bought it as I could watch it over and over again. Actors are brilliant in it! Bit scary but funny also.

An exciting Film
