Great film for kids and adults alike...,

...except I don't know who told Melinda Messenger she could act! I like this film a lot, mainly because I am a fan of Richard O'Brien! It is very hard to understand though, but after a while, I got into it. Basically, a young man is given a magic amulet which takes him to a distant, weird island where nothing is what it appears to be. Once there, the locals think he is the lost legend of the Mumbo Jumbo who will help them find their fortunes. The song and dance routine towards the end is pretty cool and John Inman (I'm free!) never fails to make me laugh. Personally I think that this film would appeal to fans of the Monty Python films with its weird and confusing plots (?). I would have given this film 5 stars if Brian Blessed didn't shout so much everytime he spoke.

Its difficult what to make of this recent, and largely unseen british comedy movie. An obvious monty phython/rocky horror show style movie, with some very wierd scenes, but it keeps entertaining throughout. Melinda messengers acting isnt much to shout about,but i doubt its her acting talents anyones intrested in!, but a great cast help the movie to survive its shortcomings in the script department. A collection of uk actors appear here including, brian blessed, richard o brien, joss akland,brian murphy and the former Dr. who, sylvester mccoy, who really steals the show, especially in the closing scenes dance routine, played out to the movies theme music!A very oddball comedy/fantasy adventure thats well worth a look!

I had high hopes for this. I love Richard O'Brien, I love Joss Ackland, I even love John Inman. I just knew it was going to be an undiscovered gem - something I'd watch over and over, finding something new each time I watched it.Less than 20 minutes in my girlfriend was pleading with me to turn it off, and I was struggling to find a reason not to. It was only that we hadn't yet seen Richard O'Brien that we persevered with it. My, what a mistake that was! The plot-line is practically non-existant. It's almost a series of badly thought-out sketches rather than a coherent film in itself. It was never explained where Sinmouth was meant to be - near America, near the UK or in another dimension entirely? Why were the children picking on young Bounder? How did John Inman's character just suddenly find the mystical book in the crypt that's been missing for 1000 yrs? The jokes were not so much double-entendres as single ones; instead of hinting at something naughty like the Carry-ons would have done, this film simply said it - how many times did they have to say the S-word for a PG certificate? Why the cutting of the Mumbo Jumbo's pubic hair unless Princess Vanilla was going to make a merkin for him rather than a normal wig as she actually did? And when will Brian Blessed ever learn that shouting every line is not how to act? The only redeeming features I can think of were the surprisingly quite-good effects where the old Mumbo Jumbo disappeared and when the new Mumbo Jumbo transformed. All in all it just adds up to one of the worst, badly-scripted, badly-directed and (I'm sorry to say) badly-acted films I've ever seen. It's not worth it even if you are a fan of any of the stars! You have been warned!
