Product Description

Box set containing all 31 episodes of the spoof chat show, including the pilot and the Christmas Specials. Starring BAFTA-winning comedienne, Caroline Aherne ('The Royle Family'), this highly successful and multiple award-winning show saw a host of celebrities queuing up to be interviewed by Aherne (in extensive makeup) as the barbed, octogenarian pensioner chat-show host with a penchant for double-entendres and rude questions delivered in a seemingly innocent tone. Amongst Mrs Merton's brave guests are Steve Coogan, Ant and Dec, Rolf Harris, Michael Parkinson, Peter Stringfellow, Vinnie Jones and even Hollywood legend, Tony Curtis, along with many others. Co-writer and fellow Royle Family actor, Craig Cash, appears as Mrs Merton's son, Malcolm.

5.0 out of 5 stars total entertainment 12 April 2009
By Joburg
I just love Caroline Aherne... this is an exchanting show, and i just grew to love the characters in the audience as much as her.

Taking her audience to Las Vegas for 2 shows there, was simply the most heartwarming thing the BBC could do. Such a treat for these wonderful old people.. It broke my heart when Jim said, before leaving Las Vagas,
"back to the reality of loneliness"

Never once boring, and with loads of laughs, I watched the series back to back...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mrs Merton Series 1-5 25 Aug 2008
Absolutely brilliant, I watched most of the 5 series within a few days of getting this.

The best bit is "Perfect Day" on the X'mas 1997 Special, but also it features all the best guests Dale Winton, Russell Grant, Debbie McGee, Rolf Harris & Max Bygraves.

Well worth it.

4.0 out of 5 stars a hidden gem 24 Mar 2008
By trigger
Well, when first broadcast I only watched a couple of episodes of this award winning show.
Thanks to network it can all be enjoyed once more,in good quality of sound & vision.
Basically it's a chat show that doesn't conform to the conventions of programmes in this genre, which makes it all the more appealing!.
Mrs Merton, played by Caroline Aherene, employs an unorthedox interviewing style that amuses & sometimes embarrasses her unsuspecting guests. She uniquely combines comedy & audacity when delivering her questions.
You'll be laughing out loud at this,I guarentee!.
If you don't find this funny,I doubt you'll find anything funny!!.
I'm glad I bought it!!.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!! 27 Jan 2011

What more can be said about Caroline Ahern's inimitable character Mrs Merton? All 32 of her shows are on this side-splitting collection - and I guarantee you won't want to stop watching once you start playing them; I only wish there were more! If you're looking for comedy at its best, you cannot pass this series over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious chat show parody 18 Sep 2012
By ReviewBlog51 TOP 500 REVIEWER
'The Miss Merton Show' was a quality mock chat show starring the BAFTA-winning comedienne Caroline Aherne. This boxset contains the complete five series of the award-winning BBC show which ran from 1994-1998, as well as the pilot and all the Christmas specials.

A very unique show, Caroline (in extensive makeup) starred as the frail looking old lady talk show host Mrs. Merton - with an acid tongue and penchant for asking cheeky questions and shocking double-entendres. It's very funny to see the celebrities fall 'victim' to this acid tongued creation. A range of people were interviewed on the show including Cynthia Payne, Mary Whitehouse, Boy George, Vinnie Jones, Steve Coogan and Joanna Lumley. There are even interviews with the likes of Bo Derek, Engelbert Humperdinck and Tony Curtis on disc four of the set as part of the 'Mrs Merton In Las Vegas' series. There's also a wonderful moment where Mrs. Merton even manages to put down Conservative MP Edwina Currie.

The regular elderly members of the show's audience are also real characters and you'll learn to like them as well. They also have to chance to ask the guests questions and also take part in another entertaining feature of the programme called 'The heated debate'.

I enjoyed 'The Mrs. Merton Show' immensely, there were times when I was shocked at how personal the questions got but still laughed out loud throughout each of the episodes. I can recommend this set to anyone who enjoys great British comedy. Here is a programme that you'll easily be able to watch episodes back-to-back.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still as funny as I remember it. 29 Dec 2011
By Aido
I think Caroline Aherne is a comedic genius. I remember watching this show when it was on tv, and I'd be disappointed whenever I missed an episode.

I've watched the first 3 discs so far and thoroughly enjoyed every episode. Caroline Aherne plays Mrs Merton, an elderly chat-show host who gets away with the cheekiest questions purely because of her age. This was filmed back in the nineties, so many of the celebrity guests may have dropped out of public life by now, but many are memorable such as Lorraine Kelly, Debbie McGee, Jonathan Ross, Carol Vorderman to name a few. My aussie partner hadn't a clue who any of the guests were but still found Mrs Merton to be very funny. How awkward and funny was the Chris Eubanks interview!? The audience members provide such a touching element to the show and become as important as Mrs Merton themselves. My favourite part so far is when Mrs Merton's 'son' Malcolm (played by her Royle Family co-star Craig Cash) comes out to play the recorder. I was in pain from laughing!

All in all, this was a great show. I love it and I'm so happy to own it on dvd.
