Product Description

About the Artist

This New Yorker (son of a French ATM designer and 4-Time Jeopardy champion from Alabama) is a former video delivery boy to the stars, who has taken the scenic route. He's worked a slew of bizarre jobs to support himself, anything from teaching gym to kindergarteners, to a stint with the Paris 'Department of Sanitation.' Wearing his world weariness in a whisky baritone that's been compared, to both sides of Tom (Waits and Jones) and all sorts of Morrison (Van and Jim), Julian finds pop songs in unlikely places: landmines, dinner plates, what you left behind the couch, even visits to the zoo!

Produced by Roger Greenawalt (Ben Kweller, The Pierces) over the summer of 2006 in Brooklyn, `The Movies Without You' is Julian's weird brand of classic psych, as in psychiatric, piano pop, 2007-cum-1979 style `Rock and Roll.' It's a sensitive brew, in which he played most of the instruments, yet managed to feature all his musical geek friends, including members of Groove Collective, Antibalas, Fine Arts Militia, and power-pop maestro Bleu. Turning the singer-songwriter genre headlong, Julian outlawed guitar from the studio, opting instead for textures like melodica, glockenspiel, ukulele, and clarinet. The EP is about his love of the movies, about watching them over and over, till your life feels like one. Listen to the opening track `Jimmy Dean And Steve McQueen', with its tyre screeches, sleigh bells, baseball organ and handclaps, and you know right away this kid is still under the spell of his 1986 native New York Mets! `Joni' is Hollywood at it's most seductive, but on Julian's terms, it's modern romanticism dressed in soaring strings & funky clavinet as played by classic period Stevie Wonder. You can prepare for `A Dream', but you won't be ready! It's the most tortuous juxtaposition of fantasy in reality, a touchstone of sensitivity, & then the `Little Demons' return, unabashed, bouncing & smiling at every exhilarant honest reflection of the day that comes from Julian's mouth.

This purchase was an ideal way to discover the talent that is Julian Velard. The CD consists of only 4 songs and costs less than a nomal album. It is in fact the equivalent of what was an EP in the days of vinyl.

The collection of songs is great and he sells every one with ease. It is hard to compare him with any other singer, hard as I have tried. His tone and delivery are clear/distinctive and the songs and lyrics grab your attention. Simply a great combination. I think he is an outstanding new talent and I have since purchased his new CD.

The Best Artist You've Never Heard Of 27 Jan 2009

I saw Julian at Cafe 939 in Berklee last Oct 08, when he toured with Ari Hest and Marianne Keith, both of whom are phenomenal artists. However, Julian has charisma when performing live, that would just blow you away. That is evident in this EP Movies Without You, which I had downloaded from Amazon. My favorites here are A Dream and Joni.

His voice is a better, deeper version of Michael Buble with a hint of Billy Joel and the stage presence of John Legend. Quite a good piano man, too.

Too bad, he's better known and admired in London, where he is based, and we are missing a great talent here in the United States. I would've thought that his talent should make him more of a household name. I can't wait to see more of his shows.

In the meantime, his EP is definitely worth listening to...
Awesome performer 10 Aug 2009

Our family discovered Julian in 2005 while he played in a local festival in Pennsylvania and have not lost track of him since. This native New Yorker was born to perform, you can find a lot of his live videos on youtube. He is now living in the UK and it is a matter of time before he is famous here. If you get a chance to go see him live during one of his yearly US tours you won't be disappointed.

In the meantime you can enjoy his music CD's...
Great Billy Joel-esque modern music! 22 Oct 2008

Just discovered him tonight looking at nearby concerts near me, and discovered this little gem. He has a link to itunes, but I couldn't buy it there cause they only have the overpriced UK page with his music so I got it from amazon.

The music is amazing. It's piano centric, with a very upbeat steady beat and catchy chorus's. I love Ben Folds but this guy is way better! I wish his stuff wasn't so hard to find, but I'll just have to live with the great 6 song album amazon sells.

Also, be sure to check out his website; one of the more creative sites I've seen in a while. [...] He also has full length streaming tracks easily playable so you can get a real sample, much better than amazon's 30 second sample. Support him; he's practically unknown but amazing and deserves all the support he gets.
