Product Description

Product Description

A definitive guidebook to walking and trekking in Romania's Carpathian Mountains, one of the wildest parts of Eastern Europe. For long isolated, Romania's Carpathians offer some of the finest walking in Europe. There are well waymarked paths, adequate maps and a good network of mountain huts. More than just beautiful landscapes, Europe's wildest mountains offer a chance to discover a European scene that has now disappeared further west. There is a remarkable wealth of wildlife, the region being one of the last European strongholds of the wolf and bear. This is a complete guide to exploring the Carpathian mountains, including both remote and more popular areas, such as Poiana Brasov, with detailed descriptions of main bases and ranges. It is illustrated with over 40 colour maps and colour photographs and packed with vital information on language, local sights and attractions, travel issues, skiing, mountain biking and walking. The author, James Roberts, was an enthusiastic walker and explorer from an early age. As a leading authority on walking in Romania, he guided walking groups there for several years. Sadly, although quite young, he died while this book was in the final stages of preparation.

About the Author

James Roberts finished work on his guide to Romania just before his untimely death in 2002. Since the revolution he had spent more than half of every year in Romania and had travelled throughout the country. An experienced solo backpacker here, as well as in the Himalaya, the Atlas and other areas, he worked as a leader of mountain-walking and wildlife groups. Married to Elena, a Romanian, James spoke the language and had an unrivalled knowledge of the country, having explored every massif solo on foot. With his detailed knowledge of the human and natural history of the country, he was an expert interpreter of the Romanian scene.

A great book 8 April 2007
By Nick
Format:Paperback
If you are planning a walking holiday in Romania or just intend to see a little of the 'wild side' of this beautiful country - then this book is a 'must buy'. The route descriptions are clear and detailed - just what a walker needs. His understanding of the country puts this book in a very different league from the offerings of The Rough Guide and Lonely Planet. I've lived in Romania for nearly four years and it's very clear it was written by a person who had a real love for the country rather than by someone sent here to write a travel guide.

Perfect for my travels 1 April 2009
By Churaig
Format:Paperback
As best I know this is the only book that covers walking in the mountains of Romania so completely. I am walking in June 2009 and have been able to plan my whole walk from this book. An excellent resource

Very good informative book. Would highly recommend it to anyone planning a walking holiday in Romania. It has ,notably, a very helpful guide at the back which explains where the different species of mammal , wild fowl and flora are likely to be spotted in Europe's last great wilderness.
Just a pity James Roberts had an untimely death a few years back so he's not around any longer to write such fine books.
