Lari Don has worked as press officer to the Scottish National Party and as a researcher and producer for BBC Scotland. She won the Canongate Prize in 2001 for one of her short stories, but now concentrates on children's fiction. She lives in Edinburgh.

Inanna has to be the original and best kick-ass heroine. If you are sick of books where boys get all the fun and cool things to do this is a must. I think it is aimed at reluctant 11-13 year olds but it would also work for confident readers from 8 upwards. It sends a great message to girls (I have 2 daughters)that whatever you want is out there but you have to go and get it.

A terrific antidote to all those Disney Princesses! Inanna does ask for help but when no one's that interested just gets out there and gets on with it herself. A good read for boys and girls alike (and the parents...)

Lari Don's reworking of this ancient [and for me little-known] folk tale is masterly and inspiring. At the end of the story ask yourself: 'are the mountains still afraid'.. they just might be!
