Product Description

"A searing and powerful novel from one of Wales’s best-selling authors.

Mother’s hand swung round and slapped Jennie across the ankles. “Don’t be so disgusting!” she hissed. “You were never wanted, you know!"" ... Never wanted ... never wanted ... never wanted ...

Despite a comfortable living, surrounded by lush farmlands, Jennie’s life under the critical eye of her tyrannical mother is hard. Desperate for affection, she stumbles upon dark secrets and into the uncertain murmurings of love.

On the other side of the scarred mountain, and in the wake of a disaster that tears through his family and their tight-knit mining community, Harry finds the burden of manhood thrust upon his young shoulders. Through the turmoil of the Depression years, life for both Harry and Jennie takes many unexpected turns, with love won and lost. But the onset of World War II brings changes that neither could have imagined."

More About the Author

Julie McGowan returned to her Welsh homeland nearly 20 years ago, which invigorated her sufficiently for her writing career to take off. Successful short stories for national magazines were followed by features, articles and rants (Woman's Weekly, Times Ed Supplement, The Lady), pantomimes, children's plays, and competition wins. Eventually her first novel, 'The Mountains Between' emerged, which was inspired by her rich Welsh heritage and quickly became a regional bestseller. This was followed by 'Just One More Summer', set in London and Cornwall, and a third novel, 'Don't Pass Me By'has just been published. A fourth novel is in the process of being written.
When not writing, Julie has been a nurse, a Health Visitor, a school matron, a Town Clerk, a piano teacher and a childminder. Currently she runs 'Is It? Theatre Company' with her daughter Cath, a company which takes drama productions with a health or social message to schools in S. Wales.
Like all actors she is comfortable in front of an audience, so is happy to run workshops, give talks, etc. Contact her on: juliemcgowanusk@live.co.uk or visit her website: www.juliemcgowan.com

5.0 out of 5 stars A BOOK TO GET LOST IN 16 Jan 2009
Format:Paperback
From the first page of this book, I knew it was one I could happily lose myself in - and my expectations were more than fulfilled. The story of two families on opposite sides of the mountains and social divides of the early 20th century is beautifully written, with characters who are entirely believable and draw you into their individual dramas. Based on the author, Julie McGowan's own family, the story rings with real authenticity and yet has the plot and structure of the best fictional construct. "The Mountains Between" is one of those books you mourn the loss of when you get to the end -- a real MUST READ recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars A definite must read! 25 May 2008
Format:Paperback
Having read Julie McGowan's second novel, 'Just One More Summer', I felt sure that her first book, 'The Mountains Between', would be equally enthralling. I was right! What a wonderful, beautifully crafted masterpiece - an absolute must read. The personalities came alive and stepped out from the pages. I could hear the voices of the villagers, smell the valley air, see the Welsh mountainside - I was there in every scene. I didn't want it to end as there was so much more I wanted to discover - an absolute page-turner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thats why I love my kindle 9 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My kindle has opened my eyes to a much bigger selection of books and I am pleased to have found Julie McGowan. I hope she won't mind me comparing her to Catherine Cookson ( with a Welsh accent) The style was professional, pleasing and the story well paced. I will certainly add Julie to my favourites list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, beautifully written 29 May 2012

I really enjoyed this book. I was lucky enough to get it for free, but it is worth paying for.

The story is well crafted and really gives a flavour of the Welsh valleys and it's people.

I liked the way the author presented the story starting with two individuals and their lives and then interwove them as the book progressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best read this year 31 May 2008
Format:Paperback
FANTASTIC book. Julie McGowan really is an excellent writer. Her style of writing draws you in from the very beginning and brings the characters to life, making this book a real page turner. Even if you've never been to Wales, the flowing descriptions and clever colloquialisms make you feel as if you're right there. Read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of insights and highly readable 9 Mar 2012
By Doc Barbara TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I first read this novel some years ago and it has haunted my mind ever since. It is readable, atmospheric and has a true sense of history. The author's narrative style races along whilst creating a range of characters and a perception of a real social divide between two towns in Wales. Although the period and places are authentically portrayed, the values and problems are relevant to any time or locality. I feel it would make an excellent film as the presentation is cinematographic and the characters gain our sympathy.
