Book Description

THE MOP tells the unbelievable (and autobiographic) story of Alan Simpson,a young man trying to find himself amidst the seedy underworld of Sydney’s red light district at the end of the twentieth century.

A time in which he was young, stoned and carefree, where his friends were the hookers and dealers that worked outside, and his co-workers a motley crew of strippers, rent-boys, freaks and perverts. Where the villains are the upright citizens of the city and the heroes are prostitutes, drug addicts and queens.

The book records Simpson’s journey from innocent impressionable hetty-boy (the stores’ token straight male) to jaded and surly porn store clerk. More than just a collection of anecdotal scenes, The Mop is a comic look at one man’s bad luck, a firsthand account of one of the worst jobs out there, a behind the scenes view of a world most readers are unfamiliar with.

The Mop explains how a relatively normal middle class kid ended up in this world and what he did to escape it. It documents the lessons learned and the sights seen along the way, showing that friendship, love and laughter can be found in the most unlikely of places.

The Mop is written for every person that has ever walked past a porn store and wondered what goes on behind the curtain, for everyone that plucked up the courage to venture inside only to come face to face with the jaded porn clerk, for anyone who ever thought ‘My job sucks’.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold. Hilarious. Depraved 15 Mar. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
The Mop should come with a parental advisory sticker on the front. It is utter filth. It is also completely hilarious filth. So if you are too squeamish to read about exploits involving casual depravity, sex toys and accidents involving body fluids then you may wish to try the sample first. For after reading 'The Mop', even a seemingly plain word such as 'slab' will be robbed of its innocence, and will never sound the same again. Discovering an unexpected mop in a cupboard could become borderline traumatic.

This is the uproarious true tale of a young man's misadventures through the seedy underbelly of Sydney, Australia. Author Alan Simpson takes you on a truly unforgettable journey (his own) through this dark, moist world of pervs and pimps. And boy has he got some writing talent to back it up. His 'roving eye' style of writing adds real immediacy to the story; the colourful cast of junkies and misfits is pure Bukowski.

Under the surface of this mile-a-minute, laugh-out-loud romp, is a deeper and far more poignant story of a young man coming of age - it's the tale of a man getting his sh*t together, when all those around him are losing theirs. Literally.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, funny and utterly compelling 14 Nov. 2013

I bought 'The Mop' on the recommendation of a friend - I was not disappointed!

Funny and witty, you really get a sense of what it is like to work in such an environment, but it is far from a light read. Your really empathise with the characters and some chapters are hard to swallow (no pun intended).

So good that I finished it within a day!

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful. 25 Jun. 2013

Laugh out loud hilarity for the non-squeamish set! A cringe-worthy romp through a world most of us (hopefully) will never witness first hand. I laughed, I cried. Simpsons' voice as an author is unique and extremely promising - looking forward to more work. Also, as a collector I am extremely happy to own one of these first press hardcovers - I have no doubt that it will be valuable in the future!

You know how when you're already in a good mood & your best friend tells this epic story that gets everyone rolling & you can't stop laughing your asses off? You then get this stupid grin on your face in anticipation of the next part of the story that you know is going to be even better? Yea, this book is just like that. I loved it. You can really relate to the main guy & it's refreshing how humorously the situations & plot twists are presented. I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure.

One of the most entertaining books I've read in ages! Certainly not for the prudish, but for the rest of us, it's a guaranteed great ride.

This is a seriously funny book. Honestly there's one story in this book about skateboarding (and more specifically at how crap the main character is at it) that made me laugh out loud.

More importantly it's a good book. It's not so much a story about working in a pornstore, as it is a story of how to move on with your life after a hard breakup. I think for a first time author Simpson did an amazing job.

I can't wait to see what he's up to next.
