Product Description

Review

Author Tom Fremantle's 19th century American ancestor Colonel Arthur Fremantle travelled through America in 1863, when the country was gripped by the turmoil of Civil War. He travelled on stagecoaches, steam trains and Mississippi rafts, ate skunk meat, met General Robert E Lee and witnessed Gettysburg before sailing home to New York. His 20th century relative strikes out on a similar journey, aiming to walk the 2,700 miles from Mexico to Manhattan with just a mule for company, starting his journey just ten days before the events of September 11. This is engaging comic travel writing that illuminates America past and present with its uniquely peripatetic method. Like his ancestor, the modern Fremantle beds down each night outdoors, sleeping as well as walking his way across the American landscape.

Jan Morris, The Times, October 11, 2003

'An agreeable Englishman ... an admirable mule and a thoroughly likeable book.'

This is a wonderful book focusing on an epic walk between Mexico and New York. The author is accompanied by a 17 year old mule for the duration of his adventure, but this is not handled in a gimmicky way. Indeed, Browny the mule, is seen as a noble traveling companion, rather than a comedic side kick. Not that the book lacks humour, there's some great laugh out loud moments, as well as more poignant excerpts regarding the American Civil War and September 11th. This is a book that really delves into the heart of modern America, especially the South, without pandering to stereotypes. It's also a very engaging road trip, with the motliest cast imaginable. For something a bit different, give it a whirl.

A bloke re-traces his Great, Great Uncle's American Civil War wanderings. The twist being that Freemantle's relative was a bored British Officer who just fancied having a look - he's become something of a legend of the war and features, for example, in Gettysburg re-enactments. Because all us Englishmen are mental, Freemantle chooses to do his step re-tracing with a Mule for company. The journey proves tougher than he expected and the book is full of lows but they serve to make the highs--when strangers show him some incredible kindnesses--really rather towering.

I really wanted to enjoy this book - especially when I saw right at the start that Tom Fremantle was starting out on his journey across America from a Mexican town called Bagdad (honestly). And in places, it really clips along nicely. But, I'm afraid, there's no real rhythm to the book. For the most part, the travels themselves are fairly mundane, his tales quite run-of-the-mill. The prose rarely sparkles.

But Mr Fremantle really gets going when he delves into the history of the American Civil War. The inspiration for his journey was a similar one made by an ancestor who witnessed America tearing itself apart first-hand. It's on these meanderings into personal and national history that the book is resurrected. And his chapter on Gettysburg is something special, really quite moving. Almost worth reading just for that. Almost.
