Product Description

When a young Amazon woman, Myrina, becomes one of the warrior priestesses known as the Moon Riders, she is well prepared to perform their sacred dances, hunt and fight when necessary. But the Moon Riders who inhabit the plains of Troy are drawn into the troubles of the city and when the visionary princess, Cassandra, becomes Myrina`s confidante, the help of the young band of horsewomen enables Cassandra`s young friend, Iphigenia to escape from the sacrifice planned for her. Hereafter the Moon Riders are drawn into the siege and the ensuing battle. Theresa Tomlinson combining meticulous research into the Amazon women with the ancient legends of Troy has created an epic story of tragic dimensions. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

'At last they emerged from the rising dust. A great party of strong-armed young women, all on horseback, their eyes and body pictures gleaming in the torchlight.' When young Myrina becomes one of the warrior priestesses known as the Moon Riders, she is well prepared to perform their sacred dances, hunt and fight when necessary. But when the visionary Trojan princess, Cassandra, joins them, events take a tragic turn. Myrina becomes her confidante, and the Moon Riders are drawn into the drama of the siege of Troy. Mysterious tales surround the exotic but little-known Amazon women. Who were they? How did they really live? Based on careful research, Theresa Tomlinson paints a fresh, intriguing background to an ancient and gripping story, combining her own drama with existing myths. A tremendous read and an epic novel of triumph and tragedy. Theresa Tomlinson and her husband live in Sheffield. Over the years Theresa has acquired an outstanding reputation for her historical novels. Shortlisted twice for the Carnegie Medal and for the Sheffield Children's Book Award, she takes a keen interest in the historical background of the north-east coast of England. Of Beneath the Burning Mountain the TES said 'A small masterpiece'. Recent visits to Turkey have sparked her imagination to research the ancient world of Troy and have resulted in this powerful story of the Amazon women. 'Theresa Tomlinson is among the strongest of a younger generation of historical novelists' Financial Times 'Scrupulous research goes into Theresa's work and undoubtedly enables her to write so vividly' Books for Keeps --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Myrina is just thirteen years old when she joins the Moon Riders, a band of Amazon women who are both warriors and priestesses. She expects to stay with them a few years, then return to her village to marry and raise a family. Little does she know what lies ahead. When Myrina meets Cassandra, the young princess of Troy, the two girls become friends. But war and tragedy lurk on the horizon. Cassandra sees in her visions the doom that her brother Paris's affair with Helen will bring to Troy. But her father dismisses her warnings as lunacy. Soon, Myrina and the other Moon Riders find themselves drawn into the Trojan War as they try to help the besieged city of Troy defend itself from the Spartans. I highly recommend this book to teen readers who are interested in the legend of Troy, or Greek mythology in general. I can't wait to read the upcoming sequel!

My friend was going on about this book she had read called the Moon Riders so when i walked into the library and saw it there i thought that i might as well give it a try,and i am so glad i did! The mix of legend, history and fantasy works fantasticly and you get drawn into the personal relationship between Myrina and Cassandra and the battle for Troy. Myrina, who starts off as a young innocent Moon Rider soon becomes the reknown Snake Lady and you feel the pain she suffers when nearly all her family and friends end up dead. I think that the seeing mirrors were a very good idea in the story so then you could find out what happened in places they weren't in. I felt for Cassandra who could feel the pain and emotions of those around her who were suffering. i liked the way that even though they were warrior women they still did their sacred dances, though i think perhaps these could have been better described. All in all i think this was a great book and i can't wait to read the next book!!!!

A Thrilling Read 30 Jun 2004

The Moon Riders tells the story of Myrina, a thirteen year old Amazon warrior girl, dancer, trick rider, and all round adventuress. She makes friends with Cassandra, princess of Troy, and becomes drawn into the Trojan war. Through Myrina's eyes the dangerous Achilles, the beautiful Helen of Troy, and her lover Paris, are all brought to life. What I enjoyed about this story, is that although it is based on legend mixed with history, the characters are down to earth. This is Myrina's tale, which gives a more personal feel to well known legends. The events are unfolding around Myrina, but she isn't there to see everything, such as what finally happens to Achilles - that would have been too contrived. Sometimes she's just too busy in the background, helping her friends and healing the wounded. I think this adds realism. After all, historic events happen around us all the time, but we don't witness them all personally. It tells the details that readers want to know. What the people ate, how they dressed and what they did for fun, as well as their fears and worries. Myrina, while very much a girl of her times, has much in common with today's teenager. She loves having new tattoos, adores horses, and thinks dreamily about her boyfriend. She's a bit of a show off too, and can't resist demonstrating her riding skills! It kind of makes you want to get out there and learn to ride... Theresa Tomlinson is an entertaining and gripping storyteller, with a knack of bringing the past into vivid life. Read this if you like horses, adventure, romance, and a touch of magic.
