Product Description

In a few words, haiku goes beneath surface appearance to grasps the heart of an experience. Each word is chosen to unlock a world of memories and associations in the reader. Haiku, like Zen, is an intensely personal experience. Jonathan Clements has selected the best of three centuries of haiku, including the work of classic poets such as Basho, Buson and Chiyo-Ni and rendered into English the elusive spiritual quality of the poems. The poems are illustrated with images from the collection of Japanese prints and paintings at the Art Institute of Chicago.

From the Publisher

nigell@frances-lincoln.com
"A most beautifully presented and illustrated book with haiku arranged around the mood of different times of the day: dawn, daylight dusk and moonlight. The illustrations are classic images from Japanese prints and paintings, most of which are reproduced for the first time."

I have had a love for Japanese haiku for a few years now, ever since reading a fictionalised account of Murasaki Shikibu's life by the author Liza Dalby. What I love about haiku is the apparent simplicity which hides an outstanding ability to express intense emotions succintly. Knowing a little about the haiku tradition, I realise that the seasons are of great importance to Japanese, to the extent that particular seasons have particular resonances (this is known as a kigo and is explained within the introduction for this small anthology).

THE MOON IN THE PINES is a simply beautiful book. The haiku selected are of impeccable quality and the colour pictures that accompany them are turly an added bonus. There is one especially that is apt to one of the short poems on the next page; the painting shows a butterfly amongst flowers and the haiku is as follows, "A fallen flower / Flew back to its perch / A butterfly" p.30-31.

One of my other favourite poems features the title sentence for the book itself. Written by Ryota, a perfect image of the moon and all the magic that it can conjure is captured within 3 lines:-
"Through may showers
One night, as if in secret
The moon in the pines".

As a gift for yourself or another, this book is an absolute gem. The introduction gives just enough information for you to get a better understanding of the tradition of haiku, as well as maybe stirring a desire to discover even more of this deceptively easy poetic form. A lovely little volume. I shall not be without it.

Detachment? Well... 11 May 2002
By H. McCarthy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Poetry is soppy, Zen is impractical and Orientals don't think or feel like the rest of mankind - three myths demolished in one elegant little book. Every poem breathes humanity and warmth, and the pictures complement them beautifully. A translator should above all respect and preserve the intent of the original author; Clements' fine, perceptive translations allow the underlying emotions and sensations of the works room to breathe, and give the reader space to make his own interpretation. These are poets who, attempting detachment from the world, have stood back far enough to observe it and themselves with loving exactness. Beautiful in every way.

Breathtaking 20 Jun 2001

A beautiful gift book. Each page of three haiku faces breathtaking paintings in the Japanese style. Most of the paintings are of nature, giving a sense of the season as one reads haiku of that season. The combination of painting and haiku gives a much deeper value.

Wonderful new translations; beautiful art 1 Nov 2001

A book to savor. If you're familiar with haiku, you keep feeling a shock of recognition when you encounter a favorite redone in Clements's thoughtful lean style. Fresh organization, by time of day. Illustrations well chosen and well reproduced. This would be a fine gift book for a young person you want to interest in poetry.
