Product Description

Review

'This wonderful guidebook…is without question the most impressive historical guide to Syria in the English language…[and] succeeds beyond all expectations' --Yasser Tabbaa, MESA Bulletin

'the best thing on the market and essential for anyone who takes their Syrian travelling seriously' --Hugh Kennedy, Times Literary Supplement

'This excellent, well-organized and highly readable guide is a must for any traveller seriously committed to Syria' --Erica C.D.Hunter, British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies

Product Description

Syria is home to some of the world's richest historical and archaeological remains dating from the Bronze Age through biblical and Byzantine times to the early Islamic and Ottoman periods. Yet even in an age of mass tourism these magnificent monuments are little known and rarely visited - in other words, ripe for discovery by independent-minded and adventurous travellers. 'The Monuments of Syria' is organised as a gazetteer of all Syria's historical sites, with complementary sections on history and architectural influences and comprehensive chronologies and glossaries. This fully revised edition includes the latest information about site visits and the layout of museums, extensive and detailed itineraries for further travel and a new 24-page colour section. '['The Monuments of Syria'] is something which has long been needed and it will be used for many years to come by those visiting the ancient and medieval sites of Syria' - M.C.A.MacDonald, Oxford Journals

I have an earlier edition of this book and took it on a months tour of Syria. It's excellent.

Particularly useful are the maps as they enable you to plan specific tours and the directions enable you to find some out of the way and little known sites which are, nevertheless, brilliant.

Don't go to Syria without it.

This book, written by a former Australian Embassador to Syria, is a "must have" for anyone touring the archaeological sites in Syria. I have just returned from the country and my guide said it was the best, most informative book on the sites and it really is. Written clearly with a brief history, map and suggested order in which to visit each site, I found it invaluable. I may also say that it was the one book which the people I was travelling with constantly wished to refer to.
