Back in 1977 my vinyl LP copy came in a huge fold out sleeve, which morphed into a 12" cubed box that gave the appearance of a large pile of records. On the spine of these "records" were to be found some extremely witty and offensive titles, such as Pet Smells, I've got a Beer Glass sticking in my Head, and An Evening with Martin Bormann. This, plus the choice swearing, gave the album a very contemporary punk edge, alongside the likes of Derek and Clive's Ad Nauseum, even though the sketches were several years older of course. But, as I'd never heard a Python record before, it is as much a punk album to me as is No More Heroes. And then you saw the Mad Hatter spinning around on the Famous Charisma Label, making it look like a Genesis record. So it certainly captured the times!
The CD version obviously conveys little of this; but the material is sequenced so perfectly that, in a less is more kind of way, it's still the best place to experience the sound of Python. There are other more recent compilations with more (lesser quality) material squeezed on, but they seem to be thrown together with little thought of impact or, dare I say it, good taste.
This CD comes with a surprisingly glossy booklet and contains 53 minutes of the most sublime comedy ever created. Most importantly it's still the only CD which contains the essential Summarise Proust sketch, including every one of Harry Baggot's hobbies. It really is the Executive version!
