Book Description

1 April 2007 Percy Jackson & the Olympians (Book 2)
Percy Jackson’s seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set foot on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get . . . well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percy’s friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed.

In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow up to The Lightning Thief, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family -- one that makes him question whether being claimed as Poseidon’s son is an honor or simply a cruel joke.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lightning DOES strike twice 4 July 2006
By Amanda Richards VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
Rick Riordan comes through again, and this follow up to The Lightning Thief is just as entertaining, informative and action-packed as the first book. This time Percy (son of Poseidon) is at school in New York when things start to go downhill fast, beginning with some bad dreams about his friend Grover the satyr, followed by an attack by cannibalistic dodge ball players.

When Annabeth (daughter of Athena) arrives on the scene with more bad news, Percy has to embark on another quest, this time unsanctioned, to save Camp Half-Blood, which is vulnerable to attack since its defenses have been breached. He also has to save Grover, who's found himself in an inter-species entanglement in which he doesn't quite see eyes to eye with his suitor.

Accompanying them is Percy's class mate Tyson, a street kid who counts Percy as his only friend, but who is much, much more than he seems. The three travel to the treacherous Sea of Monsters in the face of insurmountable odds to capture the Golden Fleece, which hopefully can counteract the poison and restore the magical protection of the Camp.

Steeped in Greek mythology, yet written for young readers, this one is highly recommended for developing the imagination with its combination of thrilling adventure and legend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great series, laughed a lot 29 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I got the books just as the movie was coming out. I read the first one in about a day because it was just so good.. In my opinion the books keep getting better and better. The Sea of Monsters is a great read (both for a kid or an adult)and will teach you a thing or two about greek mythology too. The plot twists are inventive, making the book unpredictable and fun to read. I definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a nice book to read or with an interest in Greek mythology.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Adventure! 4 April 2010
By Tasha VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Percy has almost made it througha whole year of school without being kicked out. Too good to be true? Sure it is. A run in with some monsters soon sees to that and has Percy fleeing to Camp Half-Blood where things aren't exactly as they were last year.

Finding the Golden Fleece appears to be the answer to putting the camp back to how it should be and off course Percy's the one who gets to retrieve it, along with Annabeth, Clarrise and newcomer, Tyson. They also need to rescue Grover while they're at it. All in a days work for a half-blood.

The Percy Jackson books pretty simple in style - Percy has to find something and deal with a whole load of mythical stuff on the way. It's mostly obvious what's going to happen before it does but there's a few twists and turns as well as the explanations of the myths that keep the interest factor. They're funny and full of action which makes them enjoyable to read and Sea of Monsters doesn't disappoint in this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical Mythology, brilliantly done! 6 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Brilliant stuff. Really exciting all the way through. The plot was well thought out, with plenty of suspence, action and ups and downs thoughout to keep you on your toes, With an ancient quest brought back to life. The characters were really lifelike, despite their sometimes supernatural origins. They seem like real, everyday teenage kids, living a life full of magic and danger and treating it like it's pretty normal a lot of the time. Persy jackson really brings ancient mythology into the modern world, with things like the bermuda triangle thrown in, and Ares the god of war being owed a debt by the loosers of all wars. In this book it includes the spirits from more recent battles, and the magically enhanced technology of those wars with it. I like the way the mortal world and that of the gods, monsters and heroes are right on top of each other and interconnected, but also so far apart, and that most of the world dont really notice the magic all around them, despite the enormous explosions, one eyed boys and killer old ladies. Plenty of magic and mythical monsters, and not all the monsters are bad. It kind of has a message that it's not your background that defines who you are, it's who you are and how you live your life. It also has a message about accepting your family, warts and all, but i wont go into that. You can learn a lot of interesting stuff about greek mythology. This world of gods, monsters and demigods is fantasic. The way the book ended was really unexpected, but in a really good way. I can really recommend this book to anybody and I can't wait to read the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 5 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters is a fantastic book with twists, turns and downright humor. If you have read the first one and like it, you will love this one. One of the reasons why it is good is because it explains a little bit about the other characters and it goes deeper in Greek Mythology. Finally, I would highly recommend this book

5.0 out of 5 stars EPIC NOVEL!!! 20 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
I read The Lightning Thief and I thought it was going to be the best in the series, but it wasn't. As soon as I finished chapter 18 of The Sea of Monsters I made up my mind that I liked it more than The Lightning Thief. My older 10 year-old brother (I am 6) also likes Percy Jackson. He's read all the books apart from Curse Of The Labyrinth. P.S. I'm reading The Titan's Curse now.
