I have read all but one of Magdalen Nabb's books, and they are all excellent. Marshal Guarnaccia is a likable and sympathetic character. The stories themselves are often quite poignant and sad, and this book is no exception. In addition, I had not realized until I finished it that the whole story is based on a series of unsolved, real-life serial killings in Florence.

I would like to correct a previous reviewer. "The Marshal Makes His Report" is a different book (published in 1991). It is definitely not the same book as "The Monster of Florence." I'm not sure where this confusion arose from, but rest assured that these are two different stories.

Going through this series, if you've read any of the others then this will come as a bit of a change, the Marshal seems to find his voice in this book, he seems to have more dialogue than the rest of the books put together. Based on a true story I'd never heard of, no matter if you haven't ah the wonders of Wikepedia. If you haven't read any of the series then give it a go you won't be disappointed. You'll get totally immersed in the atmosphere and characters, I really don't want to finish the series.

I wasn't impressed with "The Monster of Florence" or Magdalen Nabb. One reviewer called Nabb's character, Guarnaccia melancholy and sad - I concur. He is a cup-half-empty kind of guy.

The plot is based on the actually serial killer, who held Florence in fear, but it isn't a whodunnit or a chase after the killer of lovemaking couples in the countryside. It's about the different agendas of the police and prosecutor's office. It's more about giving the impression that efforts are taken to apprehend the monster of Florence than actually carrying out any of those efforts.

I think this made the novel bland. I had to disciplin myself to get through the book. The novel lacks action and doesn't really live up to the genre "thriller".
