Oh this is a little guilty pleasure of a story, read yesterday evening in one sitting....excellently paced, perky and fun...think B-movie,Guy N Smith, little bit of "Hot Fuzz" and the probation worker Craig Parkinson from E4's "Misfits" slotting into the role of Ellroy "Hellboy"....love the probationary policeman, a slightly earnest newbie who has read his rulebook thoroughly but the only problem is it didn't include a chapter on BIG SCARY MONSTERS or how to deal with Hellboy being your boss!!!
Yes I fell for the initiation gag too, thankyou MR Bridgeman for duping me neatly at the start oh and also informing me where the inspiration for "Swallows and Amazons" came from..loved that!..The author clearly has good knowledge of the area and the country police force(think he/she also watched and enjoyed "Hot Fuzz"),nice descriptions of the police station and Coniston appear as though the author is familiar with the area and enabled me the reader to have a lovely clear picture of the scene ready to fill it with monster mayhem!!! Thoroughly enjoyed!!

Took a gamble on this one (not much of a gamble given the cheap price) and it turned out to be a really nice surprise. Short, fast paced, nice sense of humour in much of the dialogue, set in an area I know reasonably well and, best of all, it's got a monster! This is Creature Feature B-Movie fun in writing and a highly recommended read for anyone who likes Guy N Smith (as I do) and similar authors. Will be checking out more from this author.

OK, not polished and some plotholes, but I liked it and for 77p cannot complain......a bit of a laugh with just about believable characters and actions - except of course, I am now reluctant to paddle in Coniston itself.....

The thing I love about Bridgeman's writing is that he writes such a brilliant, old-fashioned horror-story: all of the right elements are there: two teenagers sneaking off to the lake together, a crusty old policeman a week away from retirement; a tentacled monster and a fresh-faced new recruit. The book begins in a deliciously B-movie-esque way and Bridgeman expertly crafts an air of suspense and menace, whilst balancing a healthy sense of humour into the bargain.

As the story progresses Bridgeman shows his other great talent: that of twisting a well-known genre so that there are still plenty of surprises. There are some great scenes between the various policemen and the scene on the lake with the drifting yacht is inspired.

The passages dealing with encounters with the "thing" are riveting and horrific (I couldn't get to sleep after reading it!) but throughout the book Bridgeman weaves in a fabulous sense of comedy which works really well with the gory scenes. And the last line of the entire book is one of the most scarily hilarious things I have ever read!
