Ascoli has produced a good workmanlike book on the opening phase of the Great War. French's strategy is critically examined, the descriptions of the actions are clear with good maps and the text is interspersed with personal recollections from the participants. A good buy.

A surperb account of the BEF, explains just how these boys were never beaten even by superior numbers. A very well reserched account of the first few months of WWI with goods maps along with an easy to read style of writing. I would recommend to any enthusiast.

Too much information...too little clarity 20 Mar. 2013
By A6 Bubba - Published on Amazon.com

The Author has clearly researched his subject, but it it possible that he confuses detail with insight.Reading this book is a little like reading Tolstoy:what was this unit, what was this division, etc. You are overwhelmed with unit numbers, instead of names.Combined with poor maps and illustrations, this book was a disapointment.
