Product Description

Product Description

This special documentary was made in 1998 to celebrate the reunion of the four original Monkees - Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Davy Jones - when they embarked on their first tour together since 1968. Included are the original screen tests for the band's hit Sixties TV show, out-takes, concert performances, commercials and exclusive interviews. Also examined is the Monkees' foray into films, their disenchantment with chart success and the subsequent break-up.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Pete's Sake ... 5 Sep 2001
Format:DVD
Well, I gotta say that whilst this is an essential purchase for any true Monkees fan, collectors of the group may be slightly miffed upon realising that this DVD version of Rhino's excellent documentary is merely an edited account of the complete story. For reasons that remain unclear the running time here is in the region of 30 minutes shorter than the U.S. NTSC video version, with the story abruptly drawing to a close after the culmination of the mind-blowing 1968 "Head" feature film. It's as if the final years of the 1960's never happened ... Likewise, the mega-successful reunion years of the mid-late 1980's is completely void of documentation which a tremendous shame for those who have previously viewed the U.S. video. And as for the bonuses ...??? Surprise, surprise, for the original video bonuses of additional interview excerpts have also been left out and all we get is a poor, and confusingly laid-out, biography of each group member (and spot the spelling mistake !!). All said, it's a must for those who want the hits and memories of the classic TV series, but for those who require that little bit more monkeeing around ... stick to the NTSC video.

5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT MONKEES VIDEO 1 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
This is a first class video of the Monkees story as told by themselves. It contains original screentests of the band and loads of hit songs including DAYDREAM BELIEVER, PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY and ALTERNATE TITLE. For those who weren't around the first time (1966) the Monkees were absolutely huge. In 1967 they sold more records worldwide than the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Beach Boys and Dylan put together. This video shows why. They were all good improvisational actors and were blessed with one really strong rock singing voice in drummer Micky Dolenz. However it was the cute one from Manchester, Davy Jones, who broke young fans' hearts everywhere. This video includes an hilarious mock interview between Mike Nesmith and Frank Zappa and Peter Tork talks about playing the stupid one in the TV show when he was anything but that character in real life. There's some interesting stuff too about their movie HEAD written by Jack Nicolson. If you enjoyed the Monkees in the 60s this will bring back great memories. If you only know them from reruns of the TV show this will show you precisely why they became so big around the world, ie: great pop songs written by America's most talented Tin Pan Ally tunesmiths (Neil Diamond to Carole King) and of course the added bonus of a weekly half-hour-coast-to-coast-prime-time-TV-show on which to plug their latest single.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Real Monkees Story 17 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
There have been many books and story's told on how The Monkees were cast and then became a real group. But the best way to hear the truth about the group are from The Monkees themselves, and people who worked with them. Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork & Mike Nesmith tell you what it was (and still is) like to be a Monkee. Featuring behind the scenes film up to 1996's Reunion album "Justus" the first album to feature all of them since 1968. A must for all Monkees & 60's fans alike.
