5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites as a child 27 July 2011
By John Bishop - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I had many of the "Landmark" series as a child. Two were favorites: this one and "The Doctors Who Conquered Yellow Fever".

This book is exactly what it should be: clearly written with enough background to understand the main action; technical without being boring or confusing and personal without losing track of the bigger picture.

Highly recommended for its target audience of 10 to 15 and a good read for all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read for kids and teens 23 Mar 2011

I read and reread The Monitor and the Merrimac when I was young. It is an engaging story of the people surrounding the Union and Confederate navies during the Civil War. It starts with the development of the Iron Clads and talks about how John Ericsson came to suggest the revolutionary design of the Monitor. It goes through the famous naval battle in Hampton Roads. Then it traces the history of the Union Blockade of the Confederacy through the end of the war and through the development of derivative monitors.

Ericsson's Monitor transformed thinking about Naval battleship construction.

The book is highly readable and interesting. I recommend it as a wonderful introduction for any child interested in the Civil War.

I tracked down a copy in 2009 and read it to my 7 year old daughter. She loved it as much as I did as a child. I have no doubt that she'll take it off of the shelf and read it again.
