Product Description

Review

Mr. Hailey, the institutional keypuncher of hotels and airports, won't do much for your pulse points this time but then he's working at a disadvantage. Banks, for all their velvet cordons and wall-to-wall carpeting, are not very exciting places - certainly not the First Mercantile American even if it's up against many problems besides the "syphilis of inflation." Its fine old president has died and who will succeed him: forward-looking, intuitive Alex Vandervoort even if personally handicapped by an institutionalized wife (and a young liberated lawyer as a mistress); or yea-saying Roscoe Heyward who just goes along with the directors in their catastrophic investment in a shaky enterprise, not listening to Alex who is pushing a savings program expansion and stresses frugality in these times. On the side, there's an ancillary plot involving a vulnerable teller, Juanita, a missing six thousand in cash, and the fraudulent replication of Keycharge cards. . . . All quite dull even if the Hailey name assures the fact that this is as negotiable as any commercial paper - so think clink. (Kirkus Reviews) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Synopsis

Reissue of one of Hailey's best selling novels, set in the crisis- torn world of a major US bank.

A top notch novel. I know it's a cliche, but I really did have trouble putting this book down. I like the way the author is able to run several mini stories alongside each other, and then bring them together at the end. Only four stars because it took a little while to get started, but when it does - Superb! To enjoy this book to the full, it may help if you are interested in business and finance.

I like all Arthur Hailey's books and this is right up there in terms of research and merging plotlines. It is a bit dated now but if you like his other books you will like this.

a very insightful book. good characterizations 20 July 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book is one of Arthur Hailey's best books and well worth reading, both for insights into another industry (which Hailey always does well) and for well-constructed characters.

enter the bankers' world! 23 Nov 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
What did I know about banks before? A little! But since I read this book, I knew more about banks and the dillemas they face amidst the ordinary revolution of this naive world. It offers a view of a collapsing realm of economy, that which holds the blood line of society. Good!

You will not be able to finish reading this book in a month. You'll finish it in 3 days ! 19 Aug 2005
By Flavio Cipparrone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I don't view this book with an ideological mind, as other reviewer pointed.

The important point is that you will have much fun with the descriptions of what can happen to the guys in the money world.

What I can guarantee you is that you'll finish reading this book in 1, 2 or 3 days !

Very amusing. Enjoy it.
