Amazon.co.uk Review

Harry Bingham's Money Makers is a fast-paced business thriller about chicanery and family rivalries; it is also a serious consideration of the ways in which money is made and lost in today's economy. Self-made millionaire Gridley dies, leaving a will that disinherits his wife and daughter and leaves everything to whichever of his three sons has made a million by a three-year deadline. Philosopher Zack becomes a merchant banker with an expertise in international tax avoidance; young Mathew becomes a ruthless trader and increasingly a crook; playboy George lays aside the high life to rescue a dying Yorkshire furniture firm. Along the way, all of them find, and take risks with, true love, and each of them learns hard lessons about what is truly important to them. And their sister Josephine nurses their sick mother and fumes at the way she has been treated... This is an intelligent best-seller, which keeps you turning the pages. Bingham is perceptive about character and the way people change under stress--and for once this is a financial thriller which pays due weight to people who actually make things. --Roz Kaveney

Product Description

Three sons, one massive fortune. The race to be the first to make GBP1,000,000 to win the inheritence is on! Harry Bingham is a wonderful new talent in the great bestselling storytelling tradition of Jeffrey Archer and Dick Francis. Three sons. One fortune. Who will win it? A wealthy Yorkshire industrialist dies and leaves his three sons and one daughter, all used to a life of extreme luxury! absolutely nothing. Except the chance to win the entire inheritance by whichever one of them has one million pounds in his bank account at the end of three years. Startled out of their indulgent lives, the three sons start competing against each other in their mad attempt to make a million pounds. Two of them go into the City, the eldest buys a run-down factory. Which one of them is going to be successful in their desperate bid and win the millions? With a knack for story-telling in the style of Jeffrey Archer, this compulsively readable and absolutely un-put-downable novel heralds the arrival of a new bestselling, extremely commercial talent on the scene.

Format:Paperback
This is a long book but thoroughly absorbing throughout written with real knowledge of the financial world based on Harry Bingham's previous employment. This background knowledge on it's own would not be sufficient and whilst the plot is fascinating it requires the skill of a real story teller to bring it alive and retain the reader's attention. One was kept guessing throughout and there was not a dull page throughout. The intertwining threads based on the efforts of each of the threee brothers to make a million and the subsidiary struggle of the sister coping with her ailing mother with little support are cleverly contrived. The focus passes from one to another in the style of Geoffrey Archer and one is kept gussing until the very end which comes as a big surprise. I can't wait for his next book.

This is a family saga constructed around a sound plot. The writing is unexceptional, but the book has good pace and a satisfying close.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book which I finished on the way to work this morning. I have half read so many books which I end up just dumping as I don't really "care" about the characters but this really was a gripping story and has a good ending with a good twist.
Thoroughly recommended and I shall explore Mr Bingham's later books with interest
