Book Description

Nov 2008
This is the ultimate book for poster fans and film buffs around the world. With over 1500 international posters from 1945-2005 - often comparing interesting variations in the way the same movie was visually presented from country to another - this volume offers a definitive survey of both film and popular graphic art in the modern era, and is an absolute must-have for fans of either one. Drawn from the collection of the prestigious Posteritati Gallery in New York (one of the world's foremost collections of movie posters), chapters introduce the design schools, quirks, and practices of various nations - from the U.S. to Poland to Japan to Turkey - and then illustrate the graphic output of each nation in a variety of posters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent collection of images 27 Nov 2008
By Broom71
A beautifully produced, comprehensive selection of some of the most famous, as well as less well-known, film posters from around the world. Organised by country, with occasional sub-sections on particular designers or film-makers, it is an essential buy for any poster fan or collector. My only quibbles would be 1) I'd love to have seen more text, more narrative history of the medium, as well as the fantastic illustrations; 2) it has made my wish-list about four times longer than it was. A terrific book, probably now the best overview on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, colourful and colossal 23 Feb 2011
This is a superb book for anyone interested in classic films from around the world, and the imaginative artwork that has been developed to accompany and advertise them. It's split into chapters focusing on poster artwork originating from different countries (my favourites are Poland and France), but the artwork in each chapter covers classic films from all over the world. It's really interesting to see the different takes on poster artwork from country to country and some of it is extraordinary. The artwork itself dates from 1945 to present day, but the majority of these posters cover films from the 50's, 60's and 70's. If, like me, you love classic world cinema from these decades, then this is an extremely worthy and lovely book to own - impress your friends!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Could be the definative book on movie posters! 20 Jan 2009
By Michael g - Published on Amazon.com
Huge book that tries to cram in every movie poster ever made.
This book is about the "art" of the movie poster. If you are looking
for a great film with bad poster art, it probably will not be in here.
This book is more than a book on movie posters, but a great book on graphic design! Anyone going into advertising or graphic design has to have this book! The only problem I have with the book is it's lack of coverage given to American and Independent film posters. I think there is way to much coverage given to foreign movie posters. Having said this, you will find that the foreign poster art really is amazing and gives the film a whole diffrent "feel" than the Americian poster art that we are used to. All in all, you will find poster designs for movies that you have never seen before. Last, but not least, the book is an excellent refrence/shopping guide to the wonderful world of movie posters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vast, appetizing buffet of classic film art 24 Nov 2008
By A. Whitney - Published on Amazon.com
This book weighs nearly 8lbs. and is filled with 1,500 different film posters arranged by country or region. It's a wonderful collection, well put-together with a keen eye on what is included. More than just a collection of posters, the book also has spotlights on iconic poster artists (Saul Bass of course!), and examinations of multiple posters from different countries for one film.

I was so taken by the book that I got in the spirit and ordered a poster as a Christmas present. It's a relatively affordable way to get into collecting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Poster Book 14 Feb 2009
By anubia - Published on Amazon.com
This is a great book with movie posters and poster artists from around the world. It also contains spreads of differing approaches to the same film by various countries. It gets one less star only because the pages are very thin, which makes them more susceptible to tearing than other art/poster books. A slightly heavier paper stock would have made it less delicate.

3.0 out of 5 stars An index would have helped immensely 18 May 2013
By J. Boynton - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
It's a beautiful book, no doubt, and it's got lots of great reproductions of movie posters. If you just want to flip through and look at the pictures, you'd probably consider this a five-star book. If you want to find anything specific, though, you're out of luck. The book is organized generally by region, by country, and by designer (within specific countries). The table of contents for this 516-page book is very basic. And because there's no index, you can't look up specific film posters by title, director, actor, or year. It's very frustrating.

5.0 out of 5 stars Packs a punch. Bang for your buck. 31 Aug 2010

Sometimes when you see the 'list price' of items on Amazon they seem a little inflated to make the 'Amazon price' look like more of a value. This listing, however, was telling the truth. This hardback, oversized 500 page coffeetable book could certainly go for $75 in your neighborhood bookstore. I picked mine up used for $19.00 in like-new condition-- making it the best book I've certainly ever purchased for $20.

Most of the posters chosen-- even though they span from post-war era to present-- have a strong 60s feel to the composition and style. The book is packed with images; most of the spreads consist of six 5 inch-ish tall posters to a page, larger 4 posters to a page spreads, occasional 1 huge poster on an entire page and even select horizontal posters spread across 2 pages. The types of posters cover Europe, the Americas, Japan, and a small 'rest of the world' section. The book covers classic movies in film history as well as rare art-house, cult, and B-grade movies.
