Book Description

The essential guide for book lovers to the very best novels in English since 1950.

Product Description

For Colm Toibin and Carmen Callil there is no difference between literary and commercial writing – there is only the good novel: engrossing, inspirational, compelling. In their selection of the best 200 novels written since 1950, the editors make a case for the best and the best-loved works and argue why each should be considered a modern classic. Enlightening, often unexpected, and always engaging this tour through the world of fiction is full of surprises, forgotten masterpieces and a valuable guide to what to read next. 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for anyone who reads 16 Aug 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
i have this book and recently sent it also to my sister in the US who had told me she finds it difficult to know which books (novels) are worth reading.
She's since told me she loves it and should have had it years ago as it would have saved a lot of time and effort when choosing something worthwhile to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars My bible 7 Sep 2012
By Blanaido - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I go back to this book time and time again. It is a great reference book. They don't always select the most famous book of an author which is also interesting. Some books are out of print. It is also great to get a recommendation for really prolific writers such as Agatha Christie. I have been introduced to books that I would never have found by myself. The list isn't snobbish and focuses on great writing over 'literature'. There is a summary of what each book is about so you do get a chance to get some insight before embarking. The index lists books by year of publication and book is laid out in alphabetical order against the author so its very navigatable. At the end there are lists of Booker winners, Pullitzer prize winners, Whitbread so it provides more lists if you should exhaust the first one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Great Novels 20 Jan 2012
By Jack M. Walter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I got this on my Kindle and it's a really great guide that has introduced me to books I may otherwise have never heard of. My only negative comment is that, as Mr. Toibin is Irish, more than the average amount of novels mentioned in this collection are of Irish origin. Not necessarily a bad thing, but a little point that really jumped out at me. However, this is a must for people who ask themselves, "What should I read next?"

3.0 out of 5 stars A reference book only 22 Oct 2013
By Kindle Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a thoughtful list of the best novels published in the last half of the 20th century, but it does NOT contain the actual novels or excerpts from the novels. It instead consists of one-page descriptions of each novel containing about one paragraph summarizing the novel and one paragraph summarizing the author's life. Downloading the Kindle sample doesn't include an example of these summaries.
