The Who and the Small Faces were the mod chart-toppers of the sixties. However, there were lots of groups that didn't have a hit but represented better the sounds of the club scene, and these bands are the stars of this compilation which collects 25 tracks from the Decca vaults.
In 'The Mod Scene' you can find the Small Faces, but in their Booker T and the MG's mode (the instrumental "Grow Your Own"), because every track here is influenced by American soul and jazzy R&B, the favourite styles in the original mod scene. None of the sides featured here was a best seller, but almost all of them are desired collector items and floorpackers in any respectable mod club, like the incredibly groovy 'Bert's Appel Crumble' that opens the set, the ultra-cool 'Maker Her Mine' by the Hipster Image (the inclusion of that track justifies the compilation) or the Sam Cookesque effort by Chris Farlowe ('Air Travel') and the roaring soul number by Tom Jones ('Dr. Love').
Apart from that, the sound is excellent and the liner notes very interesting. A real bargain that can't be missed.
