DVD Description

David Mitchell and Robert Webb's riotous comedy show, The Mitchell and Webb Situation, gushes forth an hilarious stream of surreal and quirkily inventive sketches self-penned by the talented duo. Originally made for UKTV’s much missed channel, Play uk, its cult success catapulted the stars into their acting roles in Channel 4's hugely successful – and Bafta-nominated – Peep Show.

With their comedy-writing developed as members of the prestigious Cambridge Footlights group (where past performers include Peter Cook, John Cleese and Stephen Fry), and honed with a series of two-man shows on the Edinburgh Fringe, Mitchell and Webb have continued to shell out pure comedy gold.

Mitchell and Webb have to be one of my favourite comedy partnerships of recent years. While poking fun at the seemingly mundane in life, the extraordinary things we all seem able to accept and occasionally going off on flights of hilarious fantasy, they're never afraid to give the inner geek free reign.

This is, I think, the first solo sketch show from Mitchell and Webb, preceding the might Mitchell and Webb Sound and the Mitchell and Webb Look. This is a well written sketch show, and while there is the odd dud most of the sketches hit rather than miss, and the short quickfire nature means there are plenty of laughs in each episode. It really shows the talent of the two young performers, and the great things that have followed are easily glimpsed.

5 Stars.

I was motivated to write after reading an earlier, somewhat negative review. This is brilliant. It precedes "Peep Show" by about 3 years and, by the look of it, was recorded on a relatively low budget. Add that to the fact that it rolled out on UK Play and you have a complete recipe for a hidden gem.

The sketches come thick and fast - part parody, part satire and, most definitely, part Python. But it still feels current. A couple of popular TV shows get the M&W micky-take, as do many aspects of our popular culture. At the same time number of characters/themes reapppear at different times throughout the shows often building to an hilarious, simple, devastating punchline. Some of the sketches don't work as well as others, but in reality they are never really around long enough to become boring before the next one takes over.

Olivia Colman deserves a mention too, often providing a foil to the other two with impeccable timing.

David Kerr's direction of a Hitchcock-esque poisoning is also worth a mention as it's worthy of an Oscar in itself. Lighting and atmosphere superb.

Flawed at times yes, but comic genius in ascendency. I think if you can't find plenty to laugh at in here you have spent your life in misery at he bottom of a drain!

I did not anticipate much from this as its an early work where you would expect them to be learning the comedy biz and for it to be a bit clunky, but it was cheap enough to make it worth buying.
But I ended up finding it funnier than 'Look', but I can't in any way know if you will, like so many reviews on here - some give 5 stars, some give 1, its personal taste.
So maybe this review I'm typing and you reading is a waste of both our time.
P.S. If your a comedy commentary buff like me you would be better of with Peep Show, Look or Magicians.

Some moments of genius...
Don't expect Peep Show, which is so far off the scale as to be worth 5000 stars. This is a decent show in its' own right; there are some boring sketches, as with any show, but most... Read more

Prefer Peep Show
This is funny, and the episodes are fairly short and easy to watch, though I found it more of a bit of a chuckle humour than laugh out loud a lot. Read more
